At the De Vijfmaster Primary School in Veghel, the King and Queen of the Netherlands opened the 2017 King’s Games on Friday April 21.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attended the breakfast held on the first day of the Games, which thousands of schools across the country participate in each year. This year, over 1.2 million students will take part. The royal couple then watched a number of the sporting activities De Vijfmaster had arranged for their King’s Games.

From the sidelines, Queen Máxima – in a white and grey striped Zara coat – was a huge source of encouragement during a tug of war competition. She was hesitant earlier on to divulge what her gift to her husband will be for his 50th birthday next week.

The King’s Games were first held in conjunction with King Willem-Alexander’s inauguration in 2013.
