Condolences Sent To Swedish King Following Terror Incident in Stockholm

The King of Sweden has cut short an official visit to Brazil following a terrorist attack in central Stockholm that has killed at least four people on Friday afternoon.

“It is with dismay the Royal Family and I have been informed of the attack in Stockholm this afternoon. The background and full extent of the incident is not yet known. We are closely following the developments, but our thoughts are already now with the victims and their families,” a statement by King Carl XVI Gustaf released by the Royal Court said.

Crown Princess Victoria remains Regent until her father arrives back in Sweden. The flag above the Royal Palace of Stockholm has been lowered to half mast.

King Harald V of Norway offered his condolences to the Crown Princess, saying “I have with great sadness received the news of the terror attack in Stockholm this afternoon, which resulted in several deaths and injuries. Once again we are brutally reminded of the importance of protecting our core democratic values. On behalf of myself, the Royal Family and the Norwegian people, I send my deepest condolences and I ask Your Royal Highness to pass on my sympathy to the bereaved and relatives, and to all the Swedish people.”

King Felipe VI of Spain issued a statement offering his Swedish counterpart “firm condemnation of the attack in Stockholm and his solidarity with the Swedish people”.

A truck was driven down the pedestrian shopping street Drottninggatan on Friday afternoon before crashing into a department store. The truck had been hijacked from a nearby restaurant during a delivery. At least 15 people were taken to hospital with serious injuries; while two men have been arrested in connection with the attack.
