Two of Denmark’s royal youngsters – Prince Henrik and Princess Athena – got a taste of a typically royal task today: presiding over a royal opening. The two were in charge of opening the 2017 season of the Bakken amusement part in the woods of Dyrehaven.

Accompanied by their parents, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, seven-year-old Henrik and five-year-old Athena turned the key of the park’s main gates before taking a carriage ride into the heart of the park. They didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits as they went through the park, looking at the different rides (Athena remarked the roller coaster was “SO much fun”) and traditional stalls before they got to one of the main attractions: the replica kitchen from the television series Matador.

Here, the Princes and Princesses were treated to some cookies – and Prince Henrik was not as stealthy as he thought he was, as he was caught sneaking a piece of chocolate cake off the table and nibbling away as his parents spoke to Laura the Cook.

“That was how I learnt to speak Danish,” Princess Marie said whilst visiting the kitchen, referring to the popular television series.

Bakken is the oldest amusement park in the world, it was founded in 1583.
