20 Years Since the King’s Return!

Today, marks the 20th anniversary of the return of His Majesty King Michael of Romania to his homeland after many years in exile.

It was on Friday, 28th February 1997 when the King and his wife Queen Anne arrived at Otopeni Airport in Bucharest.  They had flown in from their home in Switzerland and upon arrival, His Majesty was handed his Romanian passport from the Foreign Ministry.

King Michael and Queen Anne then proceeded to the city where they laid flowers at the Heroes Cross University Square surrounded by 20,000 people from all over Romania who had come to welcome their King.  Later on, the King and Queen together with other members of the Royal Family had dinner with Romania’s then president Emil Constantinescu and stayed as guests of the Government at Victoria Palace.

The visit was a busy one, with His Majesty holding talks with Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea and members of the Government executive, a lunch with members of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, as well as visiting Patriarch Teoctist of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Since 1997, the Royal Family have continued to undertake many public and official activities, totalling more than 10,000 visits around the country and 310 visits abroad.

The Royal Family of Romania website has announced that on the evening of 21st March the year at the Elisabeth Palace, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Margareta will host an event dedicated to this special anniversary.
