This morning, Wednesday January 25, Princess Laurentien participated at the launch of the 14th edition of the National Reading Breakfast Days at the Nieuwe Bibliotheek in Almere-Stad, in the province of Flevoland.

In the presence of a group of children of primary school from grades 1 and 2, the Princess read the book “The Storm Whale”. The book, written and illustrated by the British illustrator and author Benji Davies, was elected Picture Book of the Year 2017 by a jury of Dutch children’s librarians.

The National Reading Days is an initiative of the Reading Foundation and organized by the Foundation for Collective Promotion of the Dutch Book (CPNB). Starting today, the National Reading Days will last until Saturday February 4. This reading campaign aims to encourage the reading of children who don’t read yet.

Since 1 January 2014, the Princess is honorary chairman of the Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to prevent and reduce illiteracy in the Netherlands and internationally.

On 24 March 2009, Princess Laurentien appointed as UNESCO Special Envoy for Literacy.
