Buckingham Palace has announced this morning that Queen Elizabeth is handing over twenty-five of her patronages to other members of the royal family at the end of the year.

Several of the transferred patronages have already had their new patrons confirmed: the Duchess of Cambridge will take over The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (Wimbledon), and Prince Harry will take over the Rugby Football Union after being vice-patron since 2010 and the Rugby Football League. Prince William is expected to take over the Welsh Rugby Union, as he is the vice-patron. The Prince of Wales is reported to be taking over the Holocaust Day Memorial Trust.

The other charities and organisations which will receive a new patron in 2017 are: Royal Institution of Great Britain, Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Battersea Dogs Home, Barnardo’s, Royal School of Needlework, Royal African Society, Amateur Swimming Association, Action for Children, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Blind Veterans UK, Edinburgh International Festival, Sport and Recreation Alliance, British Cycling Federation, NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children), Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund, British Science Association, Institution of Civil Engineers, Animal Health Trust, Royal Geographical Society and Save the Children UK.

The Palace said “the decision follows the example set by The Duke of Edinburgh who resigned from a number of Patronages on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2011.”
