Today marks the 59th Birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Sophie of Romania, the 4th daughter of Their Majesties King Michael and the late Queen Anne.

Born in Athens, Princess Sophie studied initially in Switzerland and in England. Later on, she developed her interests in fine arts, graphic design and photography when she moved to the United States, conducting her education in these fields at the Fine Arts University North Carolina, Asheville and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC.

After the fall of communism in 1989, Her Royal Highness returned to Switzerland from America to support King Michael alongside her elder sister, Crown Princess Margareta. But it was not until 1990 that Princess Sophie was able to visit Romania for the first time after which she helped establish the Princess Margarita of Romania Foundation.

As Vice President of the Foundation, Princess Sophie helped promote the Foundation’s work throughout the world and even wrote a book of children stories from which the proceeds were used by the Foundation for projects supporting children.  The Princess has one daughter herself – Elisabeth-Maria, who was named after the two Queens of Romania.

Princess Sophie now works as a well established and successful photographer in France, exhibiting her fine works around Europe. She also attends important events in Romania from time to time alongside Crown Princess Margareta and other members of the Royal Family on behalf of King Michael.
