Queen Mathilde In Jordan

In her capacity as UN Councillor for Sustainable Development, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde started, on Sunday October 23, a humanitarian working visit to Jordan accompanied by Alexander De Croo, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation of Belgium.

Upon her arrival in Amman, the Queen was received by the Jordan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Judeh along with Minister De Croo and Hendrik Van de Velde, Belgian Ambassador to Jordan and Iraq.

On Monday October 24, Queen Mathilde had a meeting with Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. After the meeting, the Queen paid a working visit to the Al Zaatari Refugee Camp, one of the largest refugee camp situated in Jordan that was opened in 2012 and there are about 85,000 Syrian refugees currently living in the camp.

In the refugee camp, Queen Mathilde met with families and children that are living in the camp. Members of the UNHCR that are working in the refugee camp were present during the meetings. Later, Queen Mathilde went to a refugee camp run by UNICEF. In this camp UNICEF provides an education project that aims to support the refugee children for the education and the psycosocial condition and the children are involved in various activities.

Queen Mathilde in the evening attended a reception held at the Belgium Embassy and then was received by Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan for a dinner.

Today, Tuesday October 25, last day of the working visit, Queen Mathilde had various meetings: the first was with the Jordanian Prime Minister Dr. Hani Al Mulqi and then with some members of the UN agencies who are working in cooperation with the Jordan goverment for the refugees issue.

Later in the morning the Queen visited the Jordan River Foundation headquarters and was joined by Queen Rania. The Jordan River Foundation (JRF), is a Jordanian non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1995 and chaired by Queen Rania, provides socio-economic projects for women and aims to create employment opportunities.
