September 30, 1964: The second son of Emperor Hirohito, Prince Masahito, married Hanako Tsugaru, a member of the Imperial aristocracy. The newlywed couple posed for official photographs in traditional Japanese dress, before changing into Western clothing for further celebrations.

One day later, the Emperor granted Prince Masahito the title Hitachi-no-miya, allowing him to form the Hitachi branch of the Imperial Family. He and his new bride were known from then on as Prince and Princess Hitachi.
