King Felipe and Queen Letizia have commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Spanish writer Camilo José Cela at the Cervantes Institute.

The King delivered a speech at the event, in which he recalled Cela’s “important role in the history of Spanish literature” as he “represented a connecting link between the before and the after of the tragedy of the Civil War.” The King called Cela’s works “one of the strongest bodies of literary creation of our country.”

Queen Letizia, repeating a pale blue printed skirt with a navy blue blouse, joined her husband for a tour of an exhibition of items related to the writer.

Cela was a Royal Senator in the Constituent Cortes and participated in the writing of the 1978 Constitution, and also was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1989. He was made Marquis of Iria Flavia by King Juan Carlos in 1996.
