King Harald Visits Sarpsborg To Mark City’s 1000th Anniversary
Norway’s King Harald V today paid a visit to the city of Sarpsborg to help celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the city’s founding by St. Olav (or King Olaf II) in 1016.
Arriving by boat, the King was tasked with unveiling a new 4.5m high sculpture entitled ‘Genesis’ that shows the head and shoulders of a youth emerging from a pool of water. It has been created by artist Finn Eirik Modahl.
King Harald also gave a speech prior to an outdoor church service, in which he described Sarpsborg as a “living centre” and a “cosmopolitan city that draws impulses – as also the King [St. Olav] at that time did.”
