Japanese public broadcaster NHK has written today that 82-year-old Emperor Akihito has plans to abdicate the throne in the “next few years”.

According to their sources, the Emperor has been discussing the matter with his close aides and would like to abdicate before becoming “too frail to carry out duties fully”, passing the throne to his elder son, Crown Prince Naruhito.

Emperor Akihito has been on the throne since the death of his father, Hirohito, in 1989. He battled prostate cancer in 2003, and had heart surgery in 2012.

The last abdication in Japan was in 1817.
