Dutch Royals At “Appeltjes van Oranje 2016”

This morning, Thursday May 26, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, joined by Princess Beatrix, took part at the “Appeltjes van Oranje 2016” award ceremony at Palace Noordeinde in The Hague.

The theme of this year’s award was: “Do yourself together!” and was focused on communal facilities.

The winners of “Appeltjes van Oranje 2016” were: the Multifunctional Center “The Gift Borg” in Oostwold in the Province of Groningen, a community center provided with child care, sports area, supermarket and social workplaces and it is run by 150 volunteers; the Village “Our Pleasure” in Nieuwer Ter Aa in the Province of Utrecht, in this village is present a multifunctional building that has a gym, a playground, a shop, a doctor chamber and a multipurpose room; the Community Center “Splendor” in Waalre in the Province of North Brabant, a meeting place for every ages that provides activities, workshops, courses and local events and it is run by more than 180 volunteers.

The prize consists of a bronze sculpture designed by Princess Beatrix and 15,000 euros. In her speech the Queen praised the work of the volunteers that run the facilities centers and stressed the importance of these multifunctional centers in the life of the small villages and small towns and for the residents.

The “Appeltjes van Oranje”started in 2003 an annual award of the “Oranje Fonds”. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima are patrons of the Orange Fund.
