King Bhumibol of Thailand is the world longest reigning monarch. On June 9th he will celebrate 70 years on Thailands throne. While his 60th jubilee was celebrated with great pump, this time the celebrations will be more low-key. On the day itself there will be a religious service in the temple of the green Buddha of the royal palace, attended by 770 monks.

The health of the 88 year old king has declined in such a way that it is impossible to plan his attendance to any of the events marking his jubilee. This week the Thai court stated the king was troubled by a fever, an infection in the knees and a slight lung infection in the right lung.

The king was last seen in public on January 11th when he visited a hospital. The last statement about the king’s health dates from February.
