King Carl Gustaf’s 70th Birthday: Fashions at the Palace Banquet

The culmination of the King of Sweden’s week-long 70th birthday celebrations was a black-tie dinner this evening at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.

As it was a private dinner, only the arrivals and greetings by King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia were broadcast and photographed, but this provided ample opportunities to observe the ladies’ gowns and tiara choices. And of course, a group photo of the King’s royal guests was released by the Royal Court.

Queen Silvia selected a bright orange evening gown with crystal embellishment, paired with the Connaught Tiara, a diamond necklace and earrings.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a new beige-coloured Elie Saab gown, with panelled lace detailing. Her hair was pulled back into an elegant chignon and the Laurel Wreath Tiara she inherited from Princess Lillian was her tiara choice for the evening.

Princess Madeleine also went for Elie Saab but a repeated gown – the sparkling grey dress she wore to her pre-wedding dinner in 2013. Her Modern Fringe Tiara and the family’s elaborate diamond epaulette earrings complimented the sparkle emanating from her gown.

From Denmark, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte were repeaters (the Queen in an ice-blue gown from her own birthday celebrations last year, Benedikte in a coral satin number that somewhat resembles a beach cover-up), while Crown Princess Mary donned a new MaxMara peplum gown in a white and light yellow floral print. She also wore an intriguing gold aigrette in lieu of a tiara.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium paired Queen Fabiola’s Wolfers Tiara with a lilac chiffon one-shouldered gown from Armani Prive.

Princess Martha Louise of Norway stuck to her typical style, in a silver one-shouldered gown complete with small train. Her tiara of choice was the diamond tiara she received from her grandfather King Olav on her 18th birthday.

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands wore one of her oriental-inspired evening gowns, a white number with intricate red and gold embroidery on the bodice and skirt, paired with the Wurttemberg Pearl and Diamond Tiara. Japanese Princess Takamado continued her citrus-themed wardrobe with an apple green chiffon evening gown with diamond jewels.

Hereditary Princess Kelly of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha continued her run of rich blues and purples at Swedish events, which is a good thing because those colours work brilliantly with the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha family’s turquoise tiara.

Romanian Crown Princess Margarita wore a red evening gown with patterning on the bodice and her go-to tiara, the Greek Diamond Key Tiara. Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia joined three of the Haga Princesses (Margaretha, Desiree and Birgitta) in neutral greys and silvers (the youngest Haga Princess Christina wore blue).
