His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan took part in what has been described as a “sacred and extraordinary” event today, when he visited a Buddhist monastery to donate specially made sandalwood boxes to store ancient relics held there.

Like many monasteries in mountainous Bhutan, the Chagri Monastery is in an isolated location, towards the northern end of the Thimpu Valley, high up in the hills.  The monastery itself was established in 1620 by Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan.  Access means a one hour trek from the nearest accessible road.

Not only did the king donate these boxes – each one weighing 55kg and beautifully wrapped in crimson and saffron coloured silks – he actually carried one of them to its sacred destination himself.
