Prince Harry: Being Pulled From Afghanistan Left Me Broken

In an interview with Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts, Prince Harry revealed how being pulled from his first tour of duty in Afghanistan left him feeling broken.

“I felt as though I was really achieving something…I’d done everything I could to get out there. Literally, being plucked out of my team. And there was an element of me thinking, ‘I’m an officer, I’m leaving my soldiers. And it’s not my own decision’,” he said of the army’s decision to remove him 10 weeks into his deployment over security concerns after an Australian magazine and an American website broke the media embargo on the news.

“‘I was broken. I didn’t know what was going to happen to them and then suddenly, I find myself on a plane that’s delayed because a Danish soldier’s coffin was being put onto the plane,” Harry continued, saying how his flight back home, which was shared with numerous injured soldiers from several countries, inspired him to do more, leading him to put together the Invictus Games. “Some of these guys should be dead. Never before have we had so many amputees survive from such unbelievably traumatic injuries. I’m now lucky enough to watch someone who should be dead run the 100 metres. You want a definition of inspiration? That’s probably it,” he said.

The second edition of the Invictus Games will be taking place in Orlando, Florida in May; while it was confirmed this week that Canada will host the third edition in late 2017.
