Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria today joined forces for climate change, participating in a pilgrimage between Halden, Norway and Strømstad, Sweden.

The two Crown Princesses began in Halden, where they met with bishops at the Søndre Enningdalen Church before starting their walk Elgåfossen, a waterfall on the border between the two Scandinavian countries. Upon reaching their destination, Mette-Marit filled a bottle with water and then, standing on the Norwegian side of the border bridge, passed it across the border to Victoria, who was standing on the Swedish side.

“I hereby award this water bottle as a symbol of the pilgrimage that will continue throughout Sweden,” Crown Princess Mette-Marit said as she passed over the bottle, before she and Victoria shared a hug and continued upon their walk, this time in Swedish territory.

That evening, the two women attended a church service at the Strömstad Church, where they watered an apple tree with the water from the pilgrimage bottle.

The climate pilgrimage is part of a world-wide movement, Act Now for Climate Justice, that is hoping to influence world leaders attending a climate conference in Paris this December to agree to actions which will “stop the catastrophic consequences of climate change and ensure sustainable development for all”. Their main aim is to ensure the poorest communities in the world are not left disadvantaged because of climate change.
