British State Visit to Germany, Day Three

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip paid a visit to the site of the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp in Lower Saxony today, on the final day of their state visit to Germany.

They were given a tour of the site, which is now a memorial site with a museum after it was burnt down in mid-1945 after its liberation by British forces, by Jens-Christian Wagner, the memorial director. The couple also laid a wreath at the obelisk and Inscription Stone.

After their walk through the site, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip met with survivors and veterans who told them of their personal experiences at the camp. “It must have been horrific,” the Queen said in conversation with a veteran navy pilot.
