Felipe and Letizia Mark Armed Forces Day
The King and Queen of Spain attended the military parade marking Armed Forces Day this afternoon at the Plaza de la Lealtad (Plaza of Loyalty) in Madrid.
King Felipe first laid a wreath in the plaza in memory of soldiers who have given their lives for Spain and inspected the guard of honour before he and Queen Letizia watched the parade. Over 500 members of the five branches of the Spanish armed forces – the army, air force, navy, civil guard and royal guard – marched past in their battalions.
At the end of the parade, an fly-past of seven C-101 aircrafts from the air force drew the Spanish flag above the city.
This year’s parade was the first that Felipe and Letizia have attended as King and Queen, last year’s event was presided over by King Juan Carlos, shortly before he officially abdicated.
The couple then hosted a reception at the Royal Palace for 250 guests from the armed forces.Filed under Spain
