Today, Monday May 18, Queen Máxima attended the inaugural lecture of Professor Javier A. Couso in the Academy Building of the University of Utrecht.

Professor Couso is a Latin American specialist in the field of Sociology of Law and Comparative Law. He is professor and director of the Constitutional Law Program at the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile. Recently he was appointed by Chilean President Michelle Bachelet as member of the advisory group that will evaluate the Chilean anti-terrorism legislation.

The title of his inaugural speech was “Sine qua non”, and it was about the role of judicial independence for the protection or human rights in Latin America. Professor Couso, for the next two years, will do comparative research along with scientists from the University of Utrecht.

The Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity was established by Utrecht University and the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam in early 2003 in honour of Prince Claus of the Netherlands, husband of Princess Beatrix and father of King Willem-Alexander. The chair is designed for outstanding young academics from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean or the Pacific.

Since May 2014, Queen Maxima is patron of the Prince Claus Chair.
