Spanish King and Queen Attend State Funeral for Germanwings Disaster Victims

The King and Queen of Spain this afternoon were present at the state funeral held for the victims of last month’s Germanwings Flight 9525 air crash.

Held at the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the 150 victims of the air crash were honoured and remembered in a religious service led by the Archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Lluís Martínez Sistach. Representatives of the Evangelical, Jewish and Muslim communities of Spain were also in attendance and participated in the service.

Among the dignitaries attending were Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, German Federal Minister for Special Affairs Peter Altmaier, the French Secretary of State for European Affairs Harlem Désir, and the CEO of Germanwings, Thomas Winkelmann. The Ambassadors to Spain of the nations where victims came from (Germany, Argentina, Kazakhstan, the UK, the US, Australia, Colombia, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Venezuela, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, Israel and the Netherlands) also attended.

At the conclusion of the service, King Felipe and Queen Letizia spent time speaking with the victims’ family members and offering them their condolences.
