Queen Margrethe’s 75th Birthday: Black-Tie Dinner

To round out the Queen of Denmark’s 75th birthday celebrations, a black-tie dinner was held this evening at Fredensborg Palace.

A smaller number of guests were invited to this dinner than the previous night’s, but included some new royals – the Swedish and Norwegian heirs and their spouses. On the menu for the evening was crab bisque, stuffed turkey breast in white wine sauce, and a camembert feuilleté.

Fireworks above the Palace heralded the end of the party.

Let’s take a look at what the royal ladies elected to wear for the evening.

Queen Margrethe recycled the pale blue-grey gown she debuted at a state banquet during the Dutch State Visit last month. This time it was paired with a turquoise jewels – the earrings and brooch from her already existing collection, and a new necklace given to her by her husband Henrik as a 75th birthday present.

Crown Princess Mary wore a new silver satin gown with bell sleeves and a slight key-hole neckline. It also had an open back, and was accessorised with grey pumps, a grey studded clutch, diamond loop earrings and a bow brooch.

Princess Marie wore a simple cream short-sleeved gown with a v-neck, which has an overlay featuring silver threaded pinstripes. Diamond drop earrings, a gold bracelet and large statement ring completed the minimalistic look. Her husband, Joachim, on the other hand decided to make up for his father not being able to attend, wearing a burgundy velvet tuxedo jacket.

Princess Benedikte went for pastel florals. Her empire waist chiffon gown had cape-like panels coming off her shoulders, and was paired with a four-sring pearl necklace.

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece pulled out a tried-and-tested dress from her collection of lace gowns, this one in silver with a gold lace overly. Like her sister, she also wore pearl jewellery.

Queen Silvia of Sweden chose a red square-necked gown with full-length sleeves and orange flower embroidery. Her elder daughter, Victoria, borrowed a gold Elie Saab gown from her sister Madeleine. Crown Princess Mette-Marit was another that stuck to what she knew – chiffon florals from Giambattista Valli.
