Queen Margrethe’s 75th Birthday: Fashions in Aarhus

  April 9, 2015 at 9:05 am by

The Queen of Denmark’s 75th birthday celebrations began yesterday, with both day and evening events. The main royal ladies were out in force, so let’s take a look at their attire in all its splendour.

Queen Margrethe II

The birthday girl chose a snow white ensemble for the City Hall reception, one that saw its first outing back in 2012 during the celebrations for her Ruby Jubilee. The outfit consists of a dress, a coat with fur trim and a small circular hat featuring bow detailing. She paired the outfit with pair of gold and purple gemstone earrings and a matching brooch.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe went to the other end of the colour spectrum and wore a navy blue evening gown with a lace bodice. Being who she is, a fur cape protected the Queen from the low temperatures. The look was finished off with the sapphire and diamond necklace and earrings that were brought to the family by Queen Alexandrine, as well as the brooch Queen Margrethe received from Aarhus as a birthday gift earlier in the day.

Crown Princess Mary

Both Princesses opted for neutral tones paired for the day, their looks even coordinating down to near-identical hairstyles. Princess Mary wore a white pleated dress paired with a recycled beige tweed coat with gold thread and black accessories (including a pillbox hat). A sapphire, diamond and pearl brooch that was first owned by Queen Margrethe’s grandmother, Princess Margaret of Connaught, was pinned to the Princess’s coat.

It was an altered recycled gown that Mary chose in the evening, but that wasn’t the main attention-stealer of her attire – that went to the diamond necklace she debuted. The necklace – which hasn’t been identified yet – is similar in design to her wedding tiara, but has a larger central scroll motif. TV2 reported that it is a necklace which can be converted to a tiara, but they may have assumed on first glance that it was indeed Mary’s wedding tiara. The new square neckline of her navy blue velvet Prada gown perfectly showcased the new jewel.

Princess Marie

Like her sister-in-law, Princess Marie wore her hair in a chignon pulled to one side to go with her white and navy coat from Paula Ka. A navy pillbox hat with a flat bow, pumps and clutch finished off the look.

For the concert, Marie also recycled, wearing a pale pink evening gown with beaded detailing that was first seen at Prince Henrik’s 75th birthday celebrations in 2009 (the gown was first worn shortly after Princess Marie gave birth to her first child, which may account for the way the dress does not appear to fit 100% this time around). A simple updo and gold accessories completed her outfit.

Princess Isabella

The eldest granddaughter of Queen Margrethe added a pop of colour to the evening, wearing a mid-pink party dress with box pleats and a navy waistband matched with navy Mary Jane flats. She had her hair neatly styled in a bun, a pair of butterfly hairpins providing some sparkle.
