The Duchess of Cambridge today paid a visit to the set of what is reported to be one of her favourite shows, Downton Abbey.

Catherine, in a new white maternity coat from JoJo Maman Bébé, was greeted by Julian Fellowes, the show’s creator, and executives of ITV, Carnival Films and Television and Ealing Studios when she arrived to the set, which is the oldest continuously working studio in the world. Zac Barker, one of the twins who plays George Crawley, handed over a bouquet of flowers to Catherine (brother Oliver later presented her with a wooden train for Prince George).

She was given a tour of the set, including visits to the hair and make-up, wardrobe and prop departments. Almost the entire cast was on set for the visit, and all happily chatted to their royal visitor.

During a stop on one of the sets, Catherine was able to watch the taping of one scene between Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and Anna Bates (Joanne Froggart). The Duchess was astonished to find out that the crew aim to film four minutes of the show per day, and marvelled at how small the sets actually were. “The sets are so much smaller than you imagine – especially when you’ve got all the crew in here as well,” she said while in the study of Mr Carson the butler.

The Duchess was given with a signed script from the series’s first episode to take home as a souvenir of her visit during a reception for the cast and crew after the tour.
