The Cambridges Begin US East Coast Visit
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have begun their three-day visit to the United States East Coast, arriving in New York City yesterday afternoon.
William and Catherine spent the day apart today, with William heading to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Obama and to speak at a World Bank meeting on illegal wildlife trade. The Duke was shown around the White House by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill, before a short meeting with Obama.
His speech at the International Corruption Hunters Alliance meeting was on a cause that the Duke has worked for for a number of years, and he stated that “in my view, one of the most insidious forms of corruption and criminality in the world today is the illegal wildlife trade.” William also praised the efforts of his father, the Prince of Wales, and his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, in the area.
Catherine, meanwhile, remained in New York City, attending engagements alongside the Mayor’s wife, Chirlane McCray. The pair helped with art projects and wrapped Christmas presents at the Northside Centre for Child Development in Harlem, where the children were slightly disappointed that the Princess coming to visit wasn’t Elsa from Frozen.
It was then on to a lunch and reception hosted by the British Consul General, where the Duchess met with several British ex-pats in the US, including actor Matthew Rhys. In the afternoon, William and Catherine both attended a reception co-hosted by United4Wildlife and the Clinton Foundation, where they met with Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.
Tonight, the Duke and Duchess will attend the Brooklyn Nets v Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game at the Barclays Centre.Filed under The United Kingdom
