The Queen of Spain is currently on a three day visit to New York City. Despite the news of the abdication of her husband, King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia continued with her official plans and her official visit began in New York City on Tuesday.

Queen Sofia, as a special guest, attended the annual session of the UNICEF Executive Board at the United Nations headquarters. The Queen gave a speech where she remembered the Nigerian girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist group, and told their parents that “their daughters are our daughters, their pain is our pain, their hope, ours.”

Following this, Queen Sofia met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon. The Queen then went on to host a luncheon in honour of female ambassadors to the United Nations.

Tomorrow, Queen Sofia will be presented with the Path to Peace award from the Vatican Foundation. The award was created in 1991 by the Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. Previous royal recipients have included Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, King Baudouin of Belgium, Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein and Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria.
