The Duchess of Kent’s 81st Birthday

The Duchess of Kent, Katharine, celebrated her 81st birthday on February 22.

Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley was born at Hovingham Hall in Yorkshire, England on February 22, 1933. She is the only daughter of Sir William Arthington Worlsey, 4th Baronet and his wife, Joyce Morgan Brunner. She was christened on 2 April, 1933 at All Saint’s Church in Hovingham. Her godparents were Sir Felix Brunner, 3rd Baronet, Sir Digby Lawson, 2nd Baronet, Mrs Arthur Colegate and Mrs Ronald Fife. She went to Queen Margaret’s School in Norfolk, where she became interested in music which eventually lead her to become patron of a charity called Making Music.

Katharine married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent on 8 June, 1961 at York Minister. The Duke is the eldest son of Prince George, Duke of Kent and his wife, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent have three children; George (born in 1962 – he is married to Sylvana Tomaselli and they have three children; Edward, Marina-Charlotte and Amelia), Helen (born in 1964 – she is married to Timothy Taylor and they have four children; Columbus, Cassius, Eloise and Estella) and Nicholas (born in 1970 – he is married to Paola Doimi de Lupis Frankopan and they have two children; Albert and Leopold). They also had a stillborn child in 1977, which caused Katharine to go into severe depression.
