Princess Laurentien At Literacy Week Opening

On Monday September 9th, Princess Laurentien opened the ninth Literacy Week in the Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel. The Princess was accompanied by Jet Bussemaker, Minister of Education, Culture and Science.

During the ceremony the winners of the “National Literacy Awards” were announced. The winners of this years were Rian Visser, a children’s writer, and Jong010, the Rotterdam children’s newspaper.

The Literacy Week takes place from 8 to 15 September. Activities throughout the country will take place to promote reading and writing. The theme this year will be “book your future!”

The Princess, as president of the “Foundation Reading and Writing”, closed the meeting.

The Reading & Writing Foundation was launched on May 27, 2004 as an initiative of Princess Laurentien. The purpose is to prevent and reduce illiteracy in the Netherlands. On March 24, 2009, Princess Laurentien was appointed as Special Envoy on Literacy for UNESCO.

Since February 1, 2011, the Princess is Chair of the High Level Group on Literacy from the European Commission.
