A suspicious package caused the bomb squad to decend on the World Childhood Foundation headquarters in New York City on Tuesday, October 14th.
The package, which was addressed to HRH Princess Madeleine, the youngest child of TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, was found to contain mix tapes, undergarments, a love letter to the Princess and a proposal – but no bomb.
Anika Sonnerberg, a spokeswoman for the royal court, spoke to the New York Post following the incident, confirming that all security protocol was followed with regards to the package. “The security scanned it as they always do with packages sent to the royal family. There was nothing dangerous in it,” she said.
A police investigation is currently underway, with the US State Department believed to have been called in to assist the NYPD in locating the package’s sender.
Princess Madeleine, who is on a month-long visit to New York to work with the Foundation, was not in the building at the time of the incident. Queen Silvia will join her daughter later this month for the Foundation’s 10th anniversary gala.

The security of Buckingham Palace has been questioned following the revelation that several media personnel have been able to gain access to the palace. One journalist was even employed by the Palace a few years ago, while another two are reputed to have gained entry to the palace in return for a ₤1,000 bribe.
The latter journalists toured the royal family’s fleet of cars, including those personally used by HM Queen Elizabeth II. The pair claims to have entered the Royal Mews unchallenged. It is believed that HM was in residence at the palace at the time. According to online reports, this security breach occurred earlier this month and a chauffeur has been suspended as a result.
The former (the employment of a journalist at the palace) occurred in 2003, and it is reported that the position he held within the palace was that of footman. He worked there for a period of two months, according to British newspapers (online editions), and took photos of the royals’ private living quarters that were published in the Daily Mirror.

Newspaper ‘Telegraaf’ reports that Jogger Erik van Zijll de Jong was arrested by the Royal Marechaussee near Villa Eikenhorst, home of the prince of Orange and his family. The jogger wanted to lock his bicycle to one of the fences of the private estate, so he could jog in part of the estate ‘De Horsten’ that is open tpo the public. The place where van Zijll de Jong stored his car is however a forbidden area. When the jogger and his bicycle were spotted by the Royal Marechaussee and he was not able to show an ID card, he was arrested by three members of the marachaussee, handcuffed, taken to the security building of the estate for one hour and a half, after which he was taken to the police station of Wassenaar.
Van Zijll de Jong feels that the reaction of the marachaussee was out of proportion and has filed an official complaint. He also intends to file a complaint with the national ombudsman, to evaluate the behavior of the three marechaussee officers.

All passengers on a Scandinavian Airlines System flight from Copenhagen Airport to Chicago, which also carried Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, were evacuated yesterday as a passenger remarked that he had a bomb in his backpack.
The person was removed immediately, followed by the evacuation of all the aircraft’s 943 occupants. The plane was then thoroughly searched by the bomb squad before passengers were allowed to return. Police announced that the 43-year-old man has been charged, and faces either a heavy fine or imprisonment.
The Royal Court’s spokesperson, Lene Balleby, told that the Crown Princely Couple waited calmly at the airport until they could return to the aircraft; refuting Ekstra Bladet’s claims that the pair were taken from the airport entirely. She also said that it was normal for the pair to be flying on regularly schedueled flights, and that they were feeling good about their trip to the United States, despite the two hour delay in their flight.
Prince Frederik and Princess Mary will begin their visit in Chicago, and then travel to Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and New York.

HRH Princess Eugenie of York, who is currently taking a gap year after finishing at Marlborough College, has reportedly been forced to scrap plans for a South American trip because of fears for her security.
Princess Eugenie, who has a personal royal protection officer, was in Mumbai days before gunmen targeted tourists there in 2008. Her father, HRH The Duke of York, is apparently worried for his daughter’s continued safety abroad and has asked that she cancel a trip to Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru. Princess Eugenie was reportedly also keen to visit the Argentine farm of her late grandmother, Susan Barrantes.
Instead, it is reported that Princess Eugenie will now travel to Los Angeles and to Sydney, Australia, where her aunt Jane Luedecke lives.
