The two royals, who are both patrons of the Save the Children Fund, brought along a knitted hat to donate, in keeping with the new campaign. “Knit a Hat” aims to reduce infant mortality rates in developing African countries, where there are many cases of preventable disases like pnuemonia, diarrhea and measles. A press release from the Danish branch of Save the Children, Red Barnet, stated that “even in Africa, there are cold nights” which explains the campaign of donating knitted caps to be sent to African children.

The cap brought by Prince Frederik was not made by him though. “I would love to have knitted it myself. But it is not true,” he said in the press conference.

The Princess Royal is currently in Copenhagen for the 121st IOC Session and Olympic Congress, which runs until October 9th. Read more about the IOC event here.

Zara Phillips appears with some unfamiliar (and familiar) faces

Zara Phillips with the Princess Royal

This week was an eventful one for Zara Phillips, daughter of the Princess Royal. Fans who were used to seeing Zara on Toytown or Ardfield Magic Star were surprised on Thursday to see her with some new faces at the Lackham horse trials in Wiltshire, England (see this article for more news). This was followed by a rousing win at the racetrack on Saturday of a Zara-trained horse at Bredawardine (see this article for more news). Racehorse owner and proud mum, Princess Anne the Princess Royal, was on hand to enjoy the win and give credit to her daughter for her horse’s amazing finish.

The atmosphere at the Lackham College grounds was so conducive to the younger, green horses that famous riders we saw at Badminton brought their younger horses for a good, low-stress competition. Zara brought out two of her lesser-known horses, Young Smoke and Petition, to compete at the lower-level event for the first time. Though they finished at 10th and 14th, Zara was very pleased with their performance, for Petition finished the trials for the first time in his young career. Aussie star Sam Griffiths brought his one year old horse, Deanes San Ciro Hit. Sam mentioned, “At this level, it is so important to give the horse plenty of confidence and that’s exactly what this venue affords.” Given Toytown’s injury and Ardfield Magic Star’s going lame at Badminton, it is probably wise for Zara to give her two younger horses some experience. Anything can happen in eventing, and in the event that her two star horses become too aged to compete, it’s certain that Zara will have another special horse or two ready to take the baton, and the trophy!

The day after the horse trials, Zara (bearing a striking resemblance to her cousin Prince William) and her mother went to the track at Bredawardine, and watched the maiden win of the Princess’ mare, Dhu Loch. Anne took no credit for the win, saying Zara did all the work training the five-year-old mare to win her first race in convincing fashion.

uk_small1In a new article in the Daily Mail, Jordan, the British glamour model and equestrian enthusiast, has struck up another royal connection: Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth, and daughter of Princess Anne, the princess royal. According to Jordan, Zara Phillips has been her friend ever since the two met last year at the Burghley Horse Trials. This is not the first time that Jordan has mingled with royalty. Earlier this year, the glamour model claimed that she had been invited to have lunch with the Queen, but had to turn down the opportunity due to a previous commitment. She later stated that she would be meeting with Princess Anne at a later date.

Just like Princess Anne, Zara Phillips is an avid equestrienne, who competes in events regularly. Jordan has also been riding horses throughout her life, and is trying to make a name for herself in the equestrian world. When asked about the new friendship, Zara Phillips’ spokesperson initially admitted that it was true; although, he later denied it. Click here to read more from the Daily Mail.

Katie Price, AKA Jordan, Declines Royal Invitation

April 8th, 2009

Glamour model Katie Price, who is better known as Jordan, recently turned down an opportunity that many people dream of: lunch at Buckingham Palace. The Telegraph reports that Price, who is best-known for her appearance and style, is not exactly the sort of person one would imagine Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, spending time with. While she was honored to receive the invitation, Price stated that she was disappointed to have to decline, due to work commitments in the United States.

This may not be the only royal invitation Katie Price will receive. Just like Princess Anne, Price is an avid equestrienne, and hopes to be able to spend time at the Princess Royal’s home, where the two will have tea and discuss polo.

Princess Anne in Gibraltar

March 5th, 2009

The Princess Royal has arrived at Gibraltar for a three-day official visit, during which she is set to open a military hospital bearing her name, the Princess Royal Medical Centre, as well as visiting a school for children with special needs.

The Spanish government, which claims that Gibraltar belongs to Spain, has protested the Princess’s visit. The Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs contacted the British Ambassador with a message that the visit was inopportune and to express annoyance at the visit and its support by the British government. The government of Gibraltar, on the other hand, has welcomed the Princess’s visit and does not seem to be impressed with the Spanish expressions of displeasure.

This is the Princess Royal’s second visit to Gibraltar in five years. She visited in 2004 to be present at the events marking Gibraltar’s 200th year of independence.

As Queen Elizabeth II’s representative, the Princess Royal today visited survivors of the Black Saturday bushfires in Wandong, north of Melbourne.

Anne visited Wandong’s fire station, primary school and a relief centre where she spoke with those who lost their homes in the fires, along with the brave CFA firefighters who helped to extinguish the inferno.

Following her visit to Wandong, Princess Anne was scheduled to visit one of the worst-hit areas in the region; but media were not permitted to accompany her due to the coroner’s inquiry.

Yesterday, the Princess attended the memorial service at Rod Laver Arena (see this blog entry) and then spent time at the Victorian Incident Emergency Control Centre.

The Princess Royal was so deeply moved upon hearing the survivors’ stories and of their loss, that she has pledged to make a personal donation to the Red Cross appeal.

Princess Anne Attends Memorial for Australian Bushfire Dead

February 22nd, 2009

Princess Anne today joined the mourners at a memorial service in Melbourne to honour the 209 people who died during the bushfires earlier this month. The Princess Royal was representing her mother Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, in commemorating the victims of the worst fires for many decades, which left tens of thousands of people homeless. The Princess read a message from the Queen during the service.

The Princess, who will also be visiting some of the devastated areas, said during the ceremony,  “Individuals and towns have responded with resilience, ingenuity, courage and selflessness to situations that were changing at terrifying speed. People from around Australia and across the world watched in horror but with admiration at their response.”

After the ceremony, the Princess visited the Department of Sustainability and Environment to see the emergency control centre.

The Queen and the Prince of Wales have offered their condolences to the Australian people, and Her Majesty has made a donation to the Australian Red Cross’s Victorian Bushfire Fund (see this blog entry for more details). The Duke of Edinburgh has opened the condolence book at the Australian High Commission in London.

For a discussion of Princess Anne’s visit to Australia to take part in this ceremony, see this thread.
