This is also an occassion for the entire family to be ’seen’ by the public, as they walk from their city residence the Grand Ducal Palace to the Place Guillaume, or Guillaume Square, where they sit and watch the celebrations.

June 23rd, 2009

His daughter Princess Alexandra has also received the position of a knight in the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau, which is an order passed onto both the Ottonian and Walram lines of the House of Nassau; in Luxembourg it is the Grand Duchy’s highest national order, bestowed for meritious service to the nation or the Grand Duke, whilst in the Netherlands it is a dynastic order conferred by the Queen upon members who have performed a special service to the Royal House.

The last few days all member states of the European Union organised elections for the European parlament. Belgium’s royal family set a good example and all adult members of the royal family were pictured while visiting the polling stations. The duke and duchess of Brabant voted at a polling station in Laeken, as did princess Astrid, her husband Lorenz and their two eldest children prince Amedeo and princess Maria Laura. Prince Laurent and his wife princess Claire went to a polling station in Tervuren to vote.

The king and queen however were unable to vote, as the constitution prohibits that. Apart from elections for the European parlament the Belgians yesterday also voted for the regional parliaments. In Luxembourg Princess Alexandra and her brother prince Félix of Luxembourg went to the polling station in Luxembourg city. Click here to see a picture.

In Hungary archduke Georg and archduchess Eilika voted in Soskut, some 30 kms south of Budapest. The archduke is a member of the junior opposition conservative party, the Hungarian Democratic Forum. He was also one of their candidates for the European parlament, but according to the first reports his party did not get enough votes to get him there. In Turin, prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, son of the pretender to the Italian throne, voted for the first time in Italy. Like archduke Georg, Emanuele Filiberto tried to get elected into European parlament but failed. Click here to see a picture.

The family participated in the traditional procession, where the statue of Mary (the patron saint of Luxembourg since 1678) which has resided in the Notre-Dame Cathedral for the two weeks of the Octave celebrations is carried through the streets of Luxembourg’s capital city.

Hundreds of pilgrims from Luxembourg, the Lorraine region of France and the Eifel region of Germany joined the procession, as did various members of the Luxembourg Government.

Following the procession, the Grand Ducal Family appeared on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace, and those who came out to support them were given a pleasant surprise when Prince Louis and Tessy brought their two young sons, Gabriel and Noah, out on to the balcony to join their family.
