King Abdullah Inaugurates Power Plant

King Abdullah of Jordan inaugurated on Monday Jordam’s first independent power plant in Amman. The $300 million Amman East Power Project was constructed on a site located at Almanakher, which is approximately 14 kilometers east of Amman, and about 1 km from the Arab Gas Pipeline.

The project’s main goal is to meet the electricity needs of the country in an economically and environmentally sustainable way, in order to contribute to the economical well-being of the population of Jordan. This project has been financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The new power plant was built by AED Jordan PSC, a company owned by a consortium formed by AES Oasis Ltd. Company(Cayman Islands) and Mitsui Co. Ltd. (Japan), which also built another power plant in Mafraq.

King Abdullah II was accompanied by a number of ambassadors, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Khaldoun Qteishat, the Royal Court Chief, Nasser Lozi, and the King’s Adviser, Ayman Safadi.

President Banda of Zambia Hopes that Swazi King Can Help Attract Investors

 King Mswati III of Swaziland toured the Kanasashi Copper Mine while on a three-day visit to Zambia. After the tour, the president of Zambia, Rupiah Banda stated that the Swazi king “would use his clout to convince big investors who have developed the tourism and sugar industries in Swaziland to come to Zambia”, according to the Lusaka Times.

King Mswati said that he is in Zambia for the purpose of looking at investment opportunities. He will make the decision about the exact type of investment when he returns to Swaziland. He also said that there was need to encourage trade between Zambia and Swaziland.

After the tour of the mines, King Mswati told the crowd that gathered for his bilateral talk with President Banda that “…the people of this province have been very generous to offer me land which we can come and look at. His Excellency (President Banda) supports that idea”.

The king also praised the safety measures employed by the mine, as well as the fact that the mine has hired women. He said that the mine will improve the standards of living in the area, as well as the economy.

After the bilateral talks, the President Banda and King Mswati held a private meeting with the mine management. King Mswati leaves Zambia on Monday July 20.

Qatar and British Royals Attend Gas Plant Opening

  On Tuesday The Emir of Qatar, H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and his wife H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned attended the opening ceremony of the South Hook Terminal for Liquefied Natural Gas in Wales in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The South Hook terminal is a technological milestone as part of the Qatargas 2 LNG value chain project. It will make additional supplies of cleaner-burning natural gas available to the UK and Europe.

Speaking on the occasion, the Emir welcomed Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and the attending guests saying “to join us in celebrating this historic occasion which is highly significant to our two countries.”

In Queen Elizabeth’s address she highlighted the importance of working together in bilateral partnershipas well as what was being celebrated was a good example of partnership between Qatar and Britian which are working together to achieve common goals.

After the opening ceremony, H H Sheikha Mozah and Queen Elizabeth toured the exhibition which displayed images of the plant, industrial and economic side of Qatar as well as Qatar’s achievements.
