This afternoon, Princess Mathilde participated to a colloquium at the Belgian Senate, held in honour of Dr. Peter Piot, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and current Executive Director of the UNAIDS, the programme of the UN to fight AIDS. The colloquium was entitled “Peter Piot and the battle against AIDS”.

Princess Mathilde is a special representative of UNICEF/UNAIDS for orphans and other vulnerable children by cause of AIDS. She has worked together with Dr. Piot on numerous occasions. On her recent visit to Mexico, the Princess visited a special hospital for AIDS patients, and last year she recorded a message (in Spanish) directed at young Latinos, to urge them to use protection against AIDS.

Princess Stephanie Sets Cornerstone for Fight Aids Monaco

May 15th, 2009

After reading an article about the high rate of HIV/AIDS infection in Monaco, Princess Stephanie took action and has made it her mission to inform others about the disease through her foundation Fight Aids Monaco. Although better known as the rebel Princess, Princess Stephanie works internationally to fight the disease as a UN AIDS Special Representative.  She made a rare public appearance today in Carpentras, France as President of the Monaco organization to lay the corner stone for the ‘Maison de Vie’ – literally “House of Life” in English.

HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover and her sister HSH Princess Stephanie of Monaco, in their roles as President of AMADE and Fight Aids Monaco respectively, renewed the 2008 agreement between the organizations to assist AIDS orphans in Burundi.  The signing took place during the 46th Annual AMADE Assembly in Monaco which took place April 2 and 3 and included a benefit dinner in the Empire Room of the Hotel de Paris on April 2.

AMADE, (Association mondiale des Amis de l’Enfance) was founded in 1963 by Princess Grace of Monaco to help children throughout the world. HRH Princess Caroline was elected to the Presidency in 1993.  Fight Aids Monaco, began in 2004 from two smaller organizations after Princess Stephanie became alarmed about the high rate of AIDS infection in Monaco.

Today’s agreement continues an ambitious three year work agreement that continues to support both organization’s goals to help more than 830,000 Burundi orphans with basic services like medical care and prevention campaigns.

Philippe & Mathilde in Mexico – Day 3

March 25th, 2009

On 24 March, the third day in Mexico (the second day of official activities – just to keep things simple), Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium attended the opening of the exposition “Belgica-Mexico, encuentro y reencuentro” at the Mexican Parliament, during which they took the time to talk to the children who were present. They met with Cesar Duarte, chairman of the chambers of deputy.

Later, they also attended an official ceremony in the City Hall of Mexico City, where Prince Philippe received the Keys of the City from Federal district’s governor, Marcelo Luis Ebrard Casaubon.

Later, Princess Mathilde visited the Condesa Clinic, which specializes in AIDS treatment. Crown Princes Mette-Marit of Norway has also visited that clinic during her visit to Mexico. The Princess was also invited to a working luncheon with INMUJERS/UNIFEM at the Ministry of Economy, after which she had a little time to recover from her busy morning.

In the evening, Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde attended the Belgium Walking Dinner at the Hotel InterCotinental. The Princess appeared in Royal blue, with a rather deep back line – much more revealing than we are used to see from her.

Totally off the record, for some reason, the official photographers seem very fond of capturing her shoes (like here and here, and this is only from Tuesday). This has made me realize, that she has been wearing almost 10 different pairs of shoes in those three days of tossing around Mexico City…

For more pictures, look here and here.
For a discussion of the visit, please see this thread.
