Japan’s Emperor Attends War Victim Memorial

The Emperor of Japan today attended a memorial service at the Budokan Martial Arts Arena in Tokyo, to commemorate victims of war. Emperor Akihito was joined by his wife, Empress Michiko, for the annual service. It takes place each year on August 15th, the anniversary of the day Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces in World War II. Tens of thousands of well-wishers lined the streets of Tokyo on Thursday to mark the 20th anniversary of Emperor Akihito’s accession to the throne. Michiko Shōda was born on October 20, 1934 to Hidesaburo and Fumiko Shōda. She first attended Futaba Elementary School and then Seishin University, which she graduated with Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Japanese Literature.
