Emperor and Empress Visit Earthquake Survivors

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have arrived in Kumamoto to offer support and comfort to some of the people affected by the recent earthquake that struck parts of southern Japan. A Delicate Task for Empress Michiko

Her Majesty Empress Michiko of Japan started the annual rearing of silkworms today at the Momijiyama Imperial Cocoonery within the Imperial Palace grounds, by placing silkworm eggs onto the branches of oak trees.  This delicate task forms part of one of the traditions incumbent upon the Empress to carry out. Members of the Japanese Imperial Family today hosted their annual spring garden party at the Akasaka Palace attended by hundreds of guests from Japanese society. The Emperor of Japan today celebrated his 82nd birthday, and was warmly celebrated by his family and the Japanese public. Japanese Empress Diagnosed with Myocardial Ischemia

Tests performed at the University of Tokyo Hospital have shown that Empress Michiko is suffering from myocardial ischemia, a condition in which blood flow to the heart is reduced. According to the Imperial Household Agency, Empress Michiko will not have to have surgery at this stage to fix the condition, she will receive medication if her chest pains continue to worsen.
