Fifty Years Ago: Imperial Happy Ending

  April 10, 2009 at 1:18 am by

In 1957, twenty-three-year-old Crown Prince Akihito of Japan felt sad and pessimistic. For nearly six years now, the Imperial Household Agency (IHA) had been busy to find him a bride – and prospects were bad. After putting together a list of 860 eligible candidates, young ladies descendant from families of the Japanese former nobility, the IHA had set to work and checked their past and pedigree. But up until now, … Continue reading

Is Japan’s Monarchy Anti-Democratic?

  March 29, 2009 at 8:50 pm by

“The monarchy is a brake on any hopes of deepening Japanese democracy and making it real. As long as it exists, democracy has quotes around it.” This is the opinion of Herbert Bix who has written a book about Emperor Hirohito that won the Pulitzer-prize. As Bix is an expert concerning the Japanese monarchy, his words are certainly well worth to be taken into careful consideration, disagreeable as their implications … Continue reading

Continuing on Their Course toward Reconciliation between Japan and other Nations: Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko To Visit Pearl Harbour

  March 3, 2009 at 12:02 pm by

Emperor Showa, at age 74, met foreign dignitaries and ambassadors on 75 occasions in one year, his son did … Continue reading
