Jewel of the Day: The Boucheron Aquamarine Clips

  August 31, 2012 at 7:55 am by

Another event attended by Her Majesty, another jewel – in this case, the marvellous Boucheron Aquamarine Clips, which Queen Elizabeth opted to wear for Paralympics Opening Ceremony. I happen to be a huge fan of Aquamarine jewellery (and that includes the Queen’s much maligned Brazilian Aquamarine parure, and especially the Aquamarine and Diamond Brooch), so every time the Queen wears these, I’m one very happy jewellery watcher. These Art Deco … Continue reading

2012 London Paralympics Opening Ceremony

  August 31, 2012 at 7:22 am by

The Paralympics Opening ceremony proved once and for all that when it comes to staging a brilliant, witty and spectacular show, Britain simply has no match. The ceremony was billed as a “journey of discovery”, and it didn’t disappoint. It was a display dedicated to the Age of Enlightenment – the period between 1600 and 1800 which saw unprecedented intellectual revolution sweeping Europe and the American colonies. The fabulous festivities … Continue reading

At the time of her birth, she was third in the Line of Succession, after her mother and elder brother. She was baptised at the Buckingham Palace by the Archbishop of York two months after her birth. The Princess’s Godparents were: Queen Elizabeth … Continue reading

London 2012: Swimming Draws the Royals In

  July 29, 2012 at 11:47 pm by

As it usually is, the Olympic swimming competition has been the place for royal spotting. Yesterday saw members of the Danish, Dutch, Luxembourgish, Norwegian and Greek royal families in the stands for the morning heats. Sitting together in the VIP section, it was a kin to a family reunion of sorts. Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary and Princess Benedikte of Denmark were on hand to cheer Jeanette … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: King William IV Brooch

  July 29, 2012 at 5:20 pm by

The Opening Ceremony of London Olympic Games was a dazzling and a magnificent event, and of course, Her Majesty had to wear jewellery to match. Her choices for the significant occasion included Queen Victoria’s Diamond Collet Necklace, Queen Mary’s Cluster Earrings, and the hero of this blog entry – King William IV Brooch. In 1830, shortly after William IV’s accession to the Throne, the new King took six large diamonds … Continue reading

The Name’s Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth

  July 29, 2012 at 3:55 pm by

The Opening Ceremony of London 2012 Olympic Games was a spectacular affair certain to be remembered for years to come. From poignant tributes to Armed Forces, to British humour at its best, the ceremony was lauded all over the world. Arguably the most memorable event was, however, Queen Elizabeth’s acting début as a “Bond Girl”. As the film began, many expected the Queen to be portrayed by a double, yet … Continue reading

The London 2012 Olympic Games began last night, with the opening ceremony taking place at the Olympic Stadium. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Games at the end of the ceremony, which featured Sir Kenneth Branagh, David Beckham and Sir Steve Redgrave. Queen Elizabeth had previously hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for the heads of state and government in London for the Games, attended by a large number of … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: The Duchess of Cambridge Pearl Pendant

  July 25, 2012 at 9:57 am by

I guess we need to clarify one thing first: today’s jewel has nothing to do with the present Duchess of Cambridge. It was name so after Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kassel who married Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had three children together; the youngest of them was Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck – mother of Mary of Teck (George V’s Consort). Princes Augusta was known … Continue reading

  July 25, 2012 at 9:19 am by

Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha hosted a lunch on Tuesday to honour the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Former Prime Ministers Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Sir John Major were also there to pay respect to the woman who was the one constant throughout their times in the office. Baroness Thatcher was the only living Prime Minister absent; the Iron Lady has largely withdrawn from public life due to … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: Prince Albert’s Sapphire Brooch

  July 23, 2012 at 6:05 pm by

Most of Her Majesty’s important jewels are currently being showcased in various Diamond Jubilee exhibitions, meaning we have been deprived of serious jewellery for quite some time now. Today, however, Queen Elizabeth made up for those unfortunate circumstances by wearing one of my personal favourite brooches – Prince Albert’s Sapphire Brooch. The brooch, also known as Queen Victoria’s Wedding Brooch, is not only absolutely stunning – it also has important … Continue reading

Reception for Members of the IOC at Buckingham Palace

  July 23, 2012 at 5:32 pm by

Queen Elizabeth hosted a reception for members of the International Olympic Committee today. The Monarch invited IOC representatives from around the world to Buckingham Palace to welcome them to London. During the reception, Count Jacques Rogge, President of the IOC, made a speech, then presented the Queen with a set of Olympic medals. Her Majesty also addressed her guests, welcoming them to London. The Queen said: “In the coming days … Continue reading

British Royal Family No Longer The Most “Expensive” In Europe

  July 21, 2012 at 11:01 am by

For many years, British Monarchy was considered to be the most expensive in Europe based on the amount the Head of State receives from the taxpayers. However, that distinction now belongs to the Dutch Royal Family, which overtook the British one this year. Professor Herman Matthijs of Ghent University has published a report on the costs of European Heads of State. In it, he notes that according to a very … Continue reading

French City Demands British Crown Jewels

  July 15, 2012 at 2:13 pm by

A French city of Angers, once the capital of the House of Plantagenet which produced fourteen English Monarchs, is demanding a compensation for the murder of its last pretender to the Throne. Edward Plantagenet, 17th Earl of Warwick, was murdered in the Tower of London on orders of Henry VII Tudor; upon his death in 1499, the House of Plantagenet became extinct in the legitimate male line. A petition posted … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: The Rhodesian Flame Lily Brooch

  July 13, 2012 at 9:11 am by

Time for another jewellery update! When Queen Elizabeth visited Birmingham and Shropshire yesterday, she was wearing one of her (and my) favourite brooches – the Flame Lily Brooch. The brooch is one of the oldest in the Queen’s collection; she has had it for 65 years now. In 1947, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret accompanied their parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, on a tour of southern Africa. During … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: The Delhi Durbar Emerald Necklace

  July 5, 2012 at 2:28 pm by

The ceremonies like Order of Thistle or Garter aren’t the most jewellery-friendly since most of the decorations consist of order insignia. Nevertheless, for today’s Thistle service Her Majesty found a way to please jewellery-watchers by donning a beautiful emerald necklace. Unfortunately, it is not the magnificent Delhi Durbar Emerald Necklace – the hero of today’s entry, but still a beauty in her own right. First the “main course” – the … Continue reading

Order of The Thistle 2012: Pomp, Ceremony, And a New Knight

  July 5, 2012 at 2:28 pm by

The annual Order of the Thistle ceremony took place today amid the usual impressive display of pomp and centuries-old ceremony. The event – one of the highlights of the Queen’s annual Holyrood week – was all the more special this year since a new Knight was officially installed – the Earl of Strathearn (as Prince William is known in Scotland). The installation ceremony was conducted by the Dean of the … Continue reading

Jewel of the Day: Brooches Worn at Ascot

  June 27, 2012 at 8:36 pm by

Whenever the Queen attends Ascot races, we are certain to be treated to five different outfits (with bookies placing bets on the colour of Her Majesty’s hat every day) and five different brooches. Queen Elizabeth didn’t disappoint this year as well, wearing some of her beautiful pieces – each meticulously chosen to match her ensemble of the day. Some of the brooches were the among those we see quite often, … Continue reading

The Queen to Give William and Kate a Cottage at Sandringham

  June 26, 2012 at 8:35 pm by

Prince William received many presents for his milestone 30th birthday, including a portrait of his wife and a sea ride. However, quite possibly the biggest present came from his grandmother, the Queen. According to reports, Her Majesty plans to give the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a cottage on her Sandringham estate; at the moment, it is not known which of the many cottages Queen Elizabeth intends to present her … Continue reading

Royal Ascot 2012: Days 3, 4 and 5

  June 25, 2012 at 11:35 pm by

Time for a report on Royal Ascot Day 3 to 5. Some pretty exciting things happened, from a victory from one of the Queen’s horses (her 21st victory at Royal Ascot), to a brilliant performance from Black Caviar. Queen Elizabeth attended each day with various members of her family joining her in support. Day 3 The Ladies Day at Ascot started amid rain and forecasts of a thunderstorm. The Queen … Continue reading
