Royal Fiancé Receives Swine Flu Vaccine, Royal Family Wait in Line

November 1st, 2009

Daniel Westling, the fiancé of HRH Crown Princess Victoria, has been confirmed as receiving the much-sought-after Influenza A (H1N1), ie. swine flu, vaccine.

Westling is considered to be in the high-risk group after undergoing a kidney transplant in May this year. The high-risk category includes pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems (cancer patients, HIV/AIDS sufferers), and people who fall into the seasonal flu vaccine at-risk group (as Daniel does).

Nina Eldh, the head of communications at the Royal Court, confirmed the news to Swedish newspaper Expressen. Eldh also confirmed that Westling is the only member of the Royal Family to have been vaccinated. “The National Board of Health and Welfare has recommended the vaccine. They [the Royal Family] will have it when it is available,” she said.

The Royal Family is believed to be receiving the vaccine in the coming weeks. TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia have previously spoken of their wish to be vaccinated against the influenza which has killed just over 6,000 people worldwide since the first outbreak was confirmed in Mexico.

Daniel Westling is not the only European royal to be vaccinated. Last week, the Norwegian Royal Court confirmed that the senior branch of the family (the King, Queen and Crown Prince Couple) had received the vaccine.

Of course the engaged couple also posed with the Royal couple for a group photo.

Swedish Royal Wedding Souvenirs Hit the Shelves

July 12th, 2009

With less than a year to go to what is being billed as the royal wedding of the year (provided Prince William doesn’t pop the question any time soon), Swedish manufacturers are busy pumping out souvenirs commemorating the engagement and upcoming nuptials of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling.

The current souvenir hot-cake is a ‘Victoria and Daniel’ dish towel, flying out the doors of Swedish stores and off of the internet store Kitsch Sweden. The towel features an image of the engaged pair from the engagement press conference, surrounded by flowers and a dove carrying two rings.

A spokesperson for the Gävle Design Forum, Malin Rydberg, told Arbetar Bladet that people buying the towel aren’t planning on using them - ”they don’t want to wipe up things with Daniel and Victoria.” Rydberg said that many of the towels were being purchased as gifts for mother-in-laws.

And with still plenty of time to go before full wedding fever hits Sweden, sales from wedding souvenirs are set to skyrocket into the billions of Swedish Kroner. Svensk Handel, a Swedish business association, has estimated that around 2.5billion SEK (approximately $226.8 million Euro) will be amassed from souvenirs prior to the June 19, 2010 nuptuals.

Haga Palace: Fit for a Newlywed Couple

April 23rd, 2009

It was announced today by the Royal Court that Crown Princess Victoria and her fiancé, Daniel Westling, will settle and raise their future family in the Haga Palace.

The Swedish Government, which previously had the right to use the Palace, made the decision today to return the Palace to King Carl XVI Gustaf for his personal use. The King in turn offered use of the Palace to his eldest daughter, who accepted the generous offer.

No date has been decided for when the pair will move into the Palace.

Haga Palace was built in the early 1800s, commissioned by King Gustav IV Adolf for the use of his family. It was here that the current King, his parents and four elder sisters lived until Prince Gustav Adolf’s untimely death in 1947. Rights to use the Palace were transferred to the Swedish Government in 1966 by King Gustav VI Adolf. Haga Palace lies in the grounds of Haga Park, in the municipality of Solna.

Daniel Westling, the fiance to Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria, has been formally introduced to the Swedish government on Friday.

180 special invited guests had the opportunity to congratulate the couple on their betrothal. Representatives of the parliament, government, authorities, land chiefs, representatives from the news industry and various organizations had been invited to the Bernadotte Hall at the royal palace.

They all first met Victoria and Daniel before moving on to King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Prince Carl Philip. Princess Madeleine was the one royal noticeably absent from the reception.

After the presentations, everyone mingled with each other, while music from Vastragotaland – Victoria’s duchy – and Gastrikland – where Daniel originates – played.

Those who met the future Prince Consort of Sweden were very impressed.

“Daniel did it gallantly, he did a very good impression,” said Sven Johansson, editor of the newspaper Arbetarbladet. “Daniel thought it was funny that I came from Gastrikland, he said it felt like home. He also said he knows of Arbetarbladet well because it was home on the kitchen table. And so we changed a few words.”

Crown Princess Victoria has completed an official visit to Brazil, a visit which focused on the 2009 Volvo Ocean Race in Rio de Janeiro.

On her first official day in Brazil, April 1st, the Crown Princess attended a seminar called “Children with Disabilities and an Independent Life” in the country’s capital. Later that day, Victoria visited the Grael Foundation. The foundation focuses on children and young adults in need to learn to sail, swim and learn seamanship.

The following day, April 2nd, Victoria attended the Ericsson Corporate Responsability Round Table meeting. And it wasn’t all work for the Princess while in Rio. She was joined by her fiancé, Daniel Westling, and the pair enjoyed a romantic walk along the famed Copacabana Beach later that evening.

But Victoria appeared to have the most fun on April 3rd, when she visited the participants of the Volvo Ocean Race at the Port of Rio de Janeiro. Here, she posed with the Ericsson Race Team, and was given a kiss by the team’s skipper, Magnus Olsson. The Princess didn’t seem phased at all, lapping up the attention with a hearty laugh and smile. That night, Victoria attended the Ericsson party at the Museum of Modern Art, wearing a stunning hot pink dress.

On April 4th, came the main day of the visit. Crown Princess Victoria was a guest on board the “Ericsson 4″ sailboat during an in-port race in Guanabara Bay. Victoria had a ball, both on the boat and back on shore, snapping some souvenir shots and posing for the photographers. She later handed over the winner’s trophy to Spanish team “Telefonica Blue”, who took out the in-port competition.

The Crown Princess and her fiancé will spend a few extra days in Brazil on a private vacation, before heading back to Stockholm later this week.
