September 8th, 2009

New York City was invaded by the Oranje-Nassaus over the weekend for the wedding of Bernardo Guillermo and Eva Prinz-Valdes. Bernardo and Eva married at the Our Lady of All Saints Church in Brooklyn on Saturday evening, with their five month old daughter Isabel christened during the wedding mass, performed by a Dutch priest. The groom’s mother, Princess Christina, sang during the ceremony, as she did for both her parents’ funerals.

Eva and her bridesmaids, including Bernardo’s sister Juliana, arrived at the church themselves, crossing a Brooklyn street before entering the church.

The Dutch Royal Family was well represented, with children from each of Princess Christina’s three sisters present to witness their first cousin’s marriage. The groom’s Orange-Nassau cousins the Prince of Orange and Princess Máxima, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien were there, as were the Van Vollenhoven delegation of Prince Maurits and Princess Marilène (it is also believed that Prince Floris, Princess Aimée and Princess Annette attended). The Bourbon-Parma relatives were represented by Princess Margarita and Tjalling ten Cate, Prince Jamie and Princess Maria Carolina.

With Bernardo and Eva’s civil wedding ceremony taking place in March, their religious wedding ceremony was the first public meeting of Princess Christina and her ex-husband, Jorge Guillermo, since their divorce. The pair has seemingly agreed a new era has began with the birth of their first grandchild back in April.

The long-awaited christening of Prince Aristides Stavros, the youngest son of Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie Chantal, took place on August 6.

The baby Prince, who is the youngest grandchild of King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, was christened in Aghioi Anargiroi monastery near the town of Ermioni. Members of the  Greek Royal Family and some of their closest relatives from other Royal Families, including Queen Sofia of Spain, Infanta Elena, Infanta Cristina and their children, attended the ceremony.
King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie looked overjoyed: indeed, this was one of the first happy family events for the former King after the serious operation he has recently undergone.

Like all his siblings, the little Prince was christened in a Greek Orthodox ceremony.

Prince Aristides was born on June 29, 2008 in Los Angeles. He has an older sister, Princess Maria-Olympia, and three older brothers, Prince Constantine Alexios, Prince Achileas-Andreas and Prince Odysseas-Kimon. The christening was presumably delayed because of King Constantine’s health problems and subsequent surgery.
