Prince Jean and Princess Philomena, Duke and Duchess of Vendôme, welcomed a son today. The baby’s first (and so far, the only-known) name is Gaston.

The little Prince is the first child for the Duke and Duchess of Vendôme, who were married earlier this year (civilly, on March 19 and religiously, on May 2). Princess Philomena’s pregnancy was announced in July. Gaston is the 8th grandchild of the Count of Paris and will eventually assume the Headship of the House of Orléans.

Prince Jean, Dauphin de France, Duke of Vendôme is the son of Henri, Count of Paris, Duke of France (the Orléanist pretender to the French throne) and Duchess Marie Therese of Württemberg, the Duchess of Montpensier. In 2006, Count of Paris created Prince Jean ‘Dauphin de France’, bypassing Jean’s mentally disabled elder brother, Prince François, Count of Clermont.

The baby’s name, Gaston, has deep roots with the House of Orléans. Distinguished members of Orléans family with the same name include Gaston, Duke of Orléans, the Fils de France and Le Grand Monsieur (the third son King Henry IV and Marie de’ Medici, the eldest surviving brother of King Louis XIII, and the last member of the elder branch of Bourbon-Orléans) and Gaston d’Orléans, Count of Eu (the son of Louis, Duke of Nemours, who himself was the son of King Louis-Philippe, and Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Kohary).

On Tuesday September 8, Lord Nicholas Windsor and his wife Paola welcomed the arrival of their second son. The baby boy was born at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. The couple also have a two year old son, Albert Louis Phillip Edward Windsor. The baby’s names have not been released yet, and many royal watchers are currently wondering if the Lord and Lady Nicholas will select traditional names for the baby, as they have done with their first-born.

According to an article in Hello! Magazine, the baby’s birthday is a very special day for his deeply Catholic parents. The 8th of September is the feast day of the Virgin Mary. Lord and Lady Nicholas married at the Vatican in 2006. Currently, the baby is the 26th person in line for the British throne, but only until he is baptized, as the inheritance rules do not allow a Catholic to inherit the throne. Lord Nicholas gave up his succession rights upon his conversion to Catholicism. Lord Nicholas is the youngest son of the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Introducing Eliane van Vollenhoven

July 8th, 2009

Two official photos of the Dutch Royal Family’s latest edition, three-day-old Eliane van Vollenhoven, have been released by the RVD.

The first image captures a heart-melting moment between the newborn and her 21-month-old sister Magali, while proud father Prince Floris looks on. Looking at the image clearly shows Magali’s opinion of her new sister, tenderly kissing Eliane’s forehead. And if those feelings were not clear enough, the second image cements them once and for all. Magali holds her sister in a tight hug, with a cheeky grin on her face.

Prince Floris was out early this morning, registering the birth of his new daughter in the Oud-Zuid municipality, Amsterdam. Speaking of his new daughter, the Prince said, “Eliane is the sunshine in house.” Floris also did not give any explanation on his and wife Princess Aimée’s choice of names for his daughter, saying that would be kept for the christening ceremony. He also said that his father, Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, was the only grandparent who had not visited the newborn yet, as the Professor is currently on a dive trip in the Maldives. “But there has been SMS contact,” Floris assured.

Floris also joked that the family home will be much more calmer than with a houseful of girls rather than boys. He said that he was “as proud as a peacock” being surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Newborn Italian Prince Will Be Prince of Piedmont

March 11th, 2009

Prince Umberto of Savoy-Aosta, who was born only four days ago, received the additional title of  ’Prince of Piedmont’ from his grandfather the Duke of Aosta. The baby prince was born in Paris on March 7th and is the son of prince Aimone of Savoy-Aosta and princess Olga of Greece.

This title emphasizes the rivalry between the two branches of the Italian royal family, as prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, grandson of Italy’s last king Umberto II, also uses the title ‘Prince of Piedmont’.  The Aosta’s however claim that they are the heirs to king Umberto, and the rightful claimants to the Italian throne.

More information from the website of the house of Savoy Aosta  here (in Italian only).
