Poll Indicates Japanese Population Support Emperor’s Desire to Step Down

A poll conducted over the weekend by Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun has shown that the majority of those surveyed support legislation changes allowing the nation’s Emperors to be able to abdicate. 76% of the over 2,000 valid responses taken said they believe  an “arrangement should be instituted to allow any emperor to step down” – while the number in favour rose to 91% when asked specifically about the current Emperor, Akihito, being … Continue reading

An Abdication Coming In Japan?

Japanese public broadcaster NHK has written today that 82-year-old Emperor Akihito has plans to abdicate the throne in the “next few years”. According to their sources, the Emperor has been discussing the matter with his close aides and would like to abdicate before becoming “too frail to carry out duties fully”, passing the throne to his elder son, Crown Prince Naruhito. Qatar Has A New Emir

33-year-old Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad has become Qatar’s new Emir. Sheikh Tamim was handed power from his father, Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar for eighteen years. The new Emir of Qatar gave a fifteen minute televised speech on regional and domestic issues. Sheikh Tamim said he will follow in his father’s footsteps.

Emir of Qatar To Abdicate?

Several local and foreign trusted news agencies, including Reuters, the Daily Telegraph and the Financial Times, are reporting that Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, is to announce that he will be giving up his powers in favour of his son, the current Crown Prince, Sheikh Tamim. Royal Court Denies Queen will Abdicate Next Year

A new book, Royal Travels – Behind the Scenes with the Monarchy, has reported that HM Queen Margrethe II will abdicate next April 16th – the day of her 70th birthday.
