This is interesting! Tanx Little Star! I guess the elder male in the family is NOT present when the woman is giving birth...

but its a nice tradition! And I guess that means the newborn from then is part of a bigger family (not just mum, dad, brothers/sisters)
But why do they want the baby to taste honey to taste something sweet?? I mean, the milk from the mother is very sweet....
... and by the way, when I had my (3 ) kids I was told not to give them honey until they was 12 months, because of the risk of become seriousely ill....
