To build on that terrific idea, I'd like to see perhaps a tracing of one piece of jewelry as it passed between families and the reasons that it did.

I remember reading a blog by a young man in San Francisco who was a descendent of the Prussian royal house. He referred to his mother lending some of her minor jewels to a young family friend for an event, then went on to say that "minor" jewels is not exactly the way to describe them. After he actually provided the detail on the pieces - a necklace and earrings - one could see his point.
