Yes, she was very popular up until around the 1970s, when the Queen's children were too young to do much in the way of royal duties and so her cousins were a lot more active in doing public duties....

I think she was referred to as Princess Alexandra of Kent when she was younger. Perhaps they dropped the "of Kent" when she married and they had to start including the "Ogilvy" bit.

Well, that isn't entirely unexpected since he'd been ill for some time, but how sad for the family that he died at Christmas, especially considering how close to Princess Alexandra's birthday it is....
