The girl, whose name is still unknown, is the sixth grandchild of the King, and will have the treatment of Alteza de España, by virtue of Royal Decree 1368/1987, which regulates the titles, treatments and honours to the members of the Royal Family. The mentioned legal disposition establishes that "the children of the Infants of Spain will have the title of Highnesses of Spain, without any special treatment, apart from the one of Excelencia".

Happiness to the Illustrious Dukes of Palm of Mallorca For their Little Girl

Elsa M. 06-05-2005 12:55 PM

http://actualidad.terra.es/familia-r...ina_336083.htm

The Princes of Asturias congratulated Infanta Cristina for the birth of her first daughter, as soon as they received the news, when they returned from their official trip to Japan. Don Felipe and Doña Letizia heard about the birth of their new niece, when they were flying from Japan, after concluding the official visit they made to that Asian country.

The Princes let the Infanta know of their joy for the birth. At this moment, it is expected the arrival of Queen Sofia and Infanta Elena in Barcelona, where the daughter of the Dukes of Palm was born, shortly before 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The King remains in Paris, where he is attending the final of Roland Garros, which is being disputed by the Spanish player Rafael Nadal.

ladybelline 06-05-2005 01:02 PM

Her name is IRENE!!! (on the royal wabsite)

Elsa M. 06-05-2005 01:05 PM

http://es.news.yahoo.com/050605/4/43ht3.html

Infanta Elena arrived today at 6:20 p.m. at the Teknon clinic of Barcelona, where her sister, Infanta Cristina, gave birth to her fourth child and first girl.

The Infanta arrived alone, coming from Madrid, where she was participating in an equestrian competition. Her husband, the Duke of Lugo, and one of their children, Froilán, are attending, next to the King, the final match of Roland Garros in Paris.

This is great news indeed! It is not hard to guess that it is a beautiful girl considering how beautiful her parents and brothers are! Irene is a very nice name and a tribute to Queen Sofia's sister, Princess Irene of Greece, who happens to live in Spain.

Irene is a really cute name, she will bring a lot of joy to her family. Can't wait to see the first pics of her!!!!!:D:D

Elsa M. 06-05-2005 01:23 PM

From Reuters:

"I am very happy for the new baby. Independently of being a girl or a boy, it comes to fulfil the expectations that we had put in our familiar planning", said Urdangarín, who attended the birth.

The Infanta is very well of spirits and she doesn’t want to separate from the girl. "She will be named just Irene", joked the ex-sportsman, in reference to the compound names that are usually given to the members of the royal family.

Elsa M. 06-05-2005 01:30 PM

Irene comes from the Greek Eirene, meaning "peace".

The first daughter of the Dukes of Palma will be named Irene, a name that "we always liked, for its meaning and beauty", said Iñaki Urdangarín. The girl was born at 3:55 in the afternoon by normal childbirth. She weights 3,685 kilos and measures 50 centimetres.

Another article from Elmundo, saying basically the same things:

http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2005/0...117965956.html

Iñaki toasts to the birth of his daughter:

Elsa M. 06-05-2005 02:17 PM

http://www.abc.es/abc/pg050605/actua...ne_infanta.asp

The godparents of little Irene will be Rosario Nadal ("great friend" of the family and wife of Prince Kyril of Bulgaria) and Perico Lopez Quesada (husband of Cristina de Borbón Dos Sicilias).
The father was present, once again, at the birth and he could cut the umbilical cord, before Garcia Valdecasas put the girl in the arms of the mother. Urdangarín justified the name of the baby “for its meaning", since it means 'peace' in Greek, and "for the beauty of the name itself", in addition to the fact that it is the name of the maternal aunt of the infanta. He added that it was the name that we wanted to give "if God would ever give us a girl".

The Duke of Palm said that the infant is "phenomenally", although with "the normal effects of a postchildbirth", but with the "highest spitits". The father of new born commented that in the begining he thought that the baby ressembled his son Pablo ("blond and with round face"), although "she has a little of the three" brothers. He explained that they have not wanted to know the sex of the baby, until it was born, like with the previous babies, and that they would feel as much "immensely happy", whether it was a boy or a girl.

Besides, Urdangarín explained that he sent a message with the news of the birth to the Princes of Asturias, because at the moment they are in Japan. Infanta Elena arrived at the Teknon clinic two hours after her sister gave birth. Finally, Iñaki Urdangarín thanked "God for the luck of having such a wonderful family" and also thanked for the work of the medical team.

Interesting that the godparents have been announced within hours of the baby being born and the baby being given a name. This doesn't usually happen in other royal families. I wonder why none of Inaki's siblings or cousins were chosen as a godparent?

What a nice sentiment about the name. Princess Irene must be very happy with her namesake. I hope we will see her visiting Cristina and baby Irene soon, too. And very nice that both Elena and Cristina have honoured their Greek heritage in naming their daughters -- Victoria Frederika for her maternal great grandmother and now Irene for her maternal great aunt. (If Alexia doesn't have another girl, she could hand down Arrietta and Ana Maria's clothes to Irene!)

I´m also not sure, what to think. It´s one of these names which were given to baby girls in german speaking countries thousands of times between 1960-1980. So I´ve many associativites in my mind...
But you are right the meaning is beautiful and I´m pretty sure it´s pronounced differently in Spain. Unfortunately I don´t get the video clips running, so I don´t know...

Infanta Cristina entered the hospital, yesterday at 9:30 a.m., with small contractions, and gave birth natural and quickly, in only fifteen minutes, shortly before 4 p.m.. The gynaecologist said that the Infanta will remain in the clinic for three days.

Don Juan Carlos received the news at the stadium of Roland Garros by a phone call. Immediately he made an euphoric gesture with his thumb and promptly received the congratulations from the personalities around him. Few minutes after this, the Royal House officially notified the birth. On the other hand, the Queen, who had accompanied the King to Paris, watched the first minutes of the final match, but, at the end of the first set, she left the stadium, to take an airplane back to Barcelona. Doña Sofia declared, at her arrival to the clinic, that she was feeling a special emotion for the fourth child of Infanta Cristina being a girl".

The Dukes of Palma also received the visit of Iñaki’s parents, Juan Maria Urdangarín and Clara Liebaert.

The hospitable centre has made available to the visitors a book of congratulations for the birth of Irene. Besides, this morning begun to arrive at the clinic the traditional branches of flowers, as well as the first gifts.

At the clinical centre of Barcelona, the Dukes of Palma are receiving as well numerous branches of flowers and little gifts for their first girl, as baby clothes and dollies. Besides, many citizens are writing their dedications in the book that the hospital made available to congratulate the birth of Irene.

After visiting Infanta Cristina and Irene, the mayor of Barcelona, Joan Clos, said that 'the girl is precious, very beautiful’. The mayor, who visited the Infanta and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, during half an hour, presented them, in name of the City Hall, with a drawing made by the illustrator Pilarín Bayés. The picture reproduces a mum and dad strolling with their children (the youngest in the arms of the father), by the gardens of the Quinta Amelia de Sarria, an habitual scenery for the Barcelonan strolls of the Dukes of Palma.

The mayor explained, that the new born 'resembles Miguel', the third son of the Dukes of Palma.

6 JUNE 2005

It's a baby booming year for the Spanish royal family. As King Juan Carlos' son, Crown Prince Felipe, visits Japan with his pregnant wife, the monarch's daughter is celebrating the birth of her fourth child.

Infanta Cristina and her spouse, Olympic handball player Iñaki Urdangarin, welcomed 8lb 2oz Irene, who is now ninth in line to the throne, at a Barcelona hospital on Sunday. The sixth grandchild of the king and Queen Sofia is the first baby girl for the royal couple, who have three sons: Juan Valentin, Pablo Nicolas y Miguel.

The queen abandoned her courtside seat at the men's final of the French Open in Paris to jet over to Barcelona, leaving the king to see Spaniard Rafael Nadal win. At the end of the match, a clearly delighted Juan Carlos leaned down from the royal box and warmly grasped the 19-year-old's hands in congratulation, explaining why his wife had had to rush off.

The king's daughter-in-law, Princess Letizia, who is in the fourth month of her pregnancy, meanwhile continued a royal visit to Japan with her husband. The couple wound down the tour with a visit to the 2005 World Expo in Aichi before enjoying a dinner hosted by Crown Prince Naruhito in their honour.

According to Hola, the Jordanian royal house sent a branch of flowers with a card from Prince Faisal Ben Al Hussein, and the Royal House of Saudi Arabia sent an original branch in form of pie, with white, pink and lilac roses, arranged on a crystal base.

Photos from Hola:
1. Juan, Pablo and Miguel leave the hospital, after meeting their new sister;
2. Queen Sofia whatches some photos of little Irene, stored in her digital camera.
