State attorney appeals against verdict for Qatari Prince - press

PRAGUE- The state attorney's office has appealed against the verdict for a member of the Qatari royal family, Prince Hamid bin Abdal Sani, who was recently sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sex with 16 underage and juvenile girls, the daily Pravo writes today.

"We are convinced that the penalty is too lenient," the paper was told by state attorney Kamil Svec, adding that he would demand roughly five years in prison.

Prince Hamid bin Abdal Sani, too, appealed the verdict on the spot and the case will now be dealt with by the Prague City Court, whose panel is to have the proceedings in the summer.

The Qatari authorities have tried in vain to take over Sani's prosecution.

At the beginning of the case, Justice Minister Pavel Nemec decided to pass the case to Qatar, but the court did not accept his decision and called it unlawful. Now Nemec's steps are being checked by the police.

Al-Sani is still in prison. On Friday, he was visited there by his distant relative, Qatari Foreign Minister Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir Al Thani, who was on a private visit to the Czech Republic and also spoke with his Czech counterpart Cyril Svoboda.

No, Shiekha Mozah was not interviewed; however, they did speak of her. They talked about her commitment to education and that because of her efforts there were many US educational university campus in Qatar. They also spoke about increasing numbers of women studying for degrees in non traditional professions. The Emir was obviously very proud of Sheikha Mozah, you could see it in his eyes when he spoke of her.

In a few days the transcript of the interview should be posted on the site.

I have never known the Emir to speak badly about women. His wife Sheikha Mozah has been involved in women's issues for a very long time and has represented him many times where she was the only female in the delegation. His daughters have gone to university for higher education abroad and he talks lovingly of his mother. His position about an active role for women in Qatar society is without question strongly in their favor.

If an allegation to the contrary was for the purpose of spreading misinformation it will serve as an opportunity to dispel the myth.

Hello All!

Sorry if this isn't the place to post this message.

I've been lurking in the shadows for weeks now, reading the board and now have decided to say hi! Sorry for not introducing myself earlier. I'm kind of message boards shy. Although, I'm not shy at all at home. :-)

I kind of discovered Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani (former Crown Prince-Heir Apparent & son of Qatar's Emir) last year. Wow! He is gorgeous and from all I read about him, he's very meek and kind.

I'm not surprise that he's dear to his people. He seems to be a very dedicated person.

I just wish I knew about him years ago when he was CP, because now I can hardly find anything about him online, and unfortunately, I cannot read Arabic, so when I go visit the sites which are all in Arabic, I'm confused and frustrated. :-(

Anyway, I want to THANK everyone for sharing news, info, articles and pictures. My sister and I really enjoy them. Especially the pics of Jassim! :-)

Btw, does anyone how to pronounce Jassim? Is it Jar-sim, Yas-sim, Has-sim... Can anyone help my out pls?

I think it's Jaa-sim, with a long 'aa' sound. A native Arabic speaker can probably confirm or deny this, though. :) Many congratulations to Sheikh Jassim and his bride, by the way!

Saba is correct. Emir Hamad was defending women's issues before it was "in" to do so. Emir Hamad has always been known as being more moderate and liberal in regards to women's issues in his country. Originally, many believed that he was moving too progressively in regards to women's issues because many were not yet comfortable with the move. He is respectful of the women in his life and encourages his daughters to be active in the polictical atmosphere. He is known as a family man, and good with the women in his life. I have heard him referred to as a "gentle giant".
Sheikha Mouzah -with Emir Hamad's backing- has not only supported women's issues and created a wonderful educational foundation for women, but she has also changed the atmosphere in Qatar. Women now make up 70% of Qatari universities. This would be unheard of without Emir Hamad's assistance and backing.

I don't understand anything about the sheikh's in the middele east.

Why could we see sheikha mouza and could'nt see sheikha bouthayna and sheikha jawahir?
Is the mother in law more intersting than the daugther's in law or vice versa???

same case of sheikha Hind and Princess Haya...
So many contradictions in the middele east world about women.

I don't get it.

FranciscanFry 05-05-2006 09:12 PM

There is an old arab proverb that basically states that a man will "keep his most treasured jewels at home". This is not the exact wording of the proverb, but you kind of get the point. Basically, this means that you keep your most treasured females protected at home- away form others' eyes. It is traditional to "protect" the sheikhas and -in saudi- princesses away from media attention and cameras. This is done out of respect for the females, and out of respect for the families.
The Emir of Qatar has chosen - along with Mouzah- to be modern and to allow his wife media attention. Emir Hamad has always been pretty liberal leaving some Qataris turned off and others in awe of his progressive attitudes.
Sheikha Jawhire will probably not be seen publically until she has given birth to all of her children and is Tamim's "favored". Tamim has a long career ahead of him and probably will have a few more wives. Some may never see Sheikha Jawhire. He may eventually marry again and have another "favored" that he would rather be seen as Qatar's "First Lady". No one knows what kind of decisions Tamim will make in the future...
As for Sheikha Hind. She choses to be traditional. She does great works, but does not want -nor need- to have her face in public. I know very little about the Dubai royals, but I know that she is highly respectable and holds her Islam morals in high regard. We will possibly never see a photo of her...

Joumana 05-06-2006 11:58 AM

When the wife of the sheikh is favored than she will be a "media wife" and the sheikh is considered as a modern sheikh. But when the sheikha is not favored than she will be considered as "treasured jewels" and the sheikh is considered as a moslim man.

COME ON please . What is this??? What kind of logic is this??? Í don't blame you at all because this is not your fault. But I'm sick of this logic and about the contradictions about women in the middele east .

Basically, for each muslim woman, it is a personal choice. There are muslim women living in america who choose to go out without their husbands only when necessary. Then there are other muslims who live very public lives. I cannot say that my logic as a more liberal muslim has any more validity than the logic of a more traditional muslim. Each woman's decision concerns herself, her husband and God - I cannot say which choice is the "correct" one.

Jassim lost a lot of weight shortly before, during and after his abdication. some speculation was that diabetes was the cause (as diabetes runs in the family and can cause drastic weight loss/gain). Now that he is married, he seems to be doing a lot better. Although he is still very thin, he seems to be holding a steady weight.
There are many abdication theories as to why he abdicated. No one is 100% certain what caused the abdication. Shortly after the abdication, Sheikh Jassim's office sent out a plea to arab and qatari forums who were debating the abdication. He basically asked for everyone to respect the family and let it be.

I'm not really familliar with the arab men and multiple wives, but is there competition between the children from the different wives? do they all get a long or do they only interact with their full blood brothers and sisters?

No, all of the children interact, but I am not sure about the wives. As far as competition is concerned, I couldn't tell you. I think it would be different among each royal house. But mostly, the wives live in different palaces/villas so there is no interference btw the wives. An arab man with multiple wives had to keep his households in order.

E se in certi posti, per esempio un aereo, e nel caso il British Airways delle 15.55 per Londra, la vicinanza è strutturale, e ci sono soltanto file di due poltrone attaccate, e non esiste il posto singolo, amen: si blocca l'aereo.

It's more of BA's fault for not just setting the rules right away and not tolerating any behavior that violates the rules.

Qatar royalty cause three-hour hold up on BA flight by refusing to sit next to male passengers

A BA plane was held up for three hours by three Qatar princesses

A Qatar sheikh held up a British Airways flight at Milan's Linate airport for nearly three hours after discovering three of his female relatives had been seated next to men they did not know.

When none of the other business class passengers agreed to swap seats, the sheikh, a member of Qatar's ruling family, went to the pilot, who had already started the engine, to complain, an airport official said.
A mediation attempt was made but as the sheikh and his travelling companions - the three women, two men, a cook and a servant - refused to sit down, the pilot ordered them off the plane for safety reasons.

But the solution was so simple and easy- just rent the aeroplane only for them.....

Dude I dont think so, so what if someone did something helpful for another? regardless of the reason, i mean they had every right to refuse but it wasnt wrong of him to ask, yes what he did was wrong on every level but dont you think you are blowing it out of proportion? yes he overreacted but come on sue him!

Damascus, Syria -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday passed a letter from Noam Shalit, the father of captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, to Syrian President Bashar Assad, officials from Sarkozy's office said. The officials, who were speaking anonymously in accordance with presidential policy, said the letter from Noam Shalit is to be handed over to the emir of Qatar, who is to pass it to Khaled Meshal, the Damascus-based leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Gilad Shalit has been held captive by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip for two years.
French daily Le Monde reported Thursday that the French president would like Assad to lean on Meshal to forward the letter to the Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip, so that it can deliver the letter to Gilad Shalit. Sarkozy landed in Damascus on Wednesday to take part in a multilateral summit with heads of state from Turkey and Qatar.
Last month, Noam Shalit met with French officials, and asked for Sarkozy's help in winning his son's release. Shalit asked that Sarkozy discuss his son with Assad. The Shalit family expects Sarkozy to address the matter during his visit to Syria, since Gilad is a French citizen, and Assad shelters Hamas' political leadership in Damascus, led by Khaled Meshal. "Assad undoubtedly holds sway over the members of the Hamas political bureau, and can help advance the stuck negotiations," said members of the campaign to free Shalit.
The prime minister of Turkey, the president of France and the emir of Qatar are set to meet Thursday in Damascus with Assad, in a step that symbolizes an increase in Syria's power in the region and the end of the isolation that has been imposed on it.
Speaking at a press conference on the arrival of Sarkozy in Damascus on Wednesday, Assad denied that Syria was promoting a "new regional axis." However he stressed that all the participants in the summit were leading countries: France being the current president of the European Union, Syria as current chair of the Arab Summit, and Qatar as current chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
