from elmundo.es:

The Royal House has announced the pregnancy of the Princess de Asturias, who will give birth to a child in the month of November. The child of Felipe de Borbón and seventh grandchild of the Kings of Spain will be the future Heir to the Throne.

Next day 22nd, the couple, who has already expressed its great happiness, celebrates the first wedding anniversary. Almost a year after their union, the Princes of Asturias announced their paternity through an announcement. In the note of the Royal House, the Kings, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía, added themselves to the happiness of the couple.

In the last weeks, the rumours bout Letizia Ortiz’s maternity had received more and more force. Just a few months after the wedding, on May 22nd 2004, the speculations on the possible gestation of Letizia Ortiz started to arise and the Prince of Asturias even had to personally deny it in some occasions. Today, La Zarzuela has stopped these rumours, confirming the pregnancy of the Princess de Asturias, who will give "probably" give birth in the same Madrilenian clinic as Infanta Elena, the International Rúber, according to a spokesman of the House of the King. Letizia Ortiz has about three months of pregnancy, term that the Royal House always hopes to announce a gestation.

This announcement is not going to alter the agenda of the Princes of Asturias, who will travel today from Madrid to Palma de Mallorca, to start an official visit to Balears that will last until Friday.

The last public acts attended by the Princes of Asturias before the pregnancy announcement took place on Friday, in Barcelona, where they inaugurated the Hall the Automobile, among other activities. Today, Don Juan Carlos is in this same province, specifically at the circuit of Montmeló, where the GP of Spain in Formula 1 takes place. From there, he has made his first declarations on this pregnancy. The King is "very happy" for this future birth, a joy that is shared by the whole family. The first child of Prince Felipe will be the second in line to the Throne. "It is necessary to treat it just like one more person", said the monarch.

Boy or girl

The first child of the Princes of Asturias will receive the title of Infante or Infanta of Spain, according to the sex. The first-born of Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will maintain, that title, while their parents are the Princes of Asturias. Once they become the King and Queen, the situation will change and the child will inherit the title of XXXVI Prince or Princess of Asturias that goes united to the condition of heir to the Spanish Throne. But with the present Constitution, this will only take place in case the first child of Don Felipe and Doña Letizia is male or, if it is a woman, until a male descendant is born. It will also happen if there is a single daughter. Supposing that only daughters were born, the eldest one would be the heiress.
The Magna Carta emphasizes therefore the preference of men to the succession to the Throne; a rule that the president of the Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has promised to change during the present Legislature, in order to end the discrimination towards women.

http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2005/0...115543536.html

THE PROBLEMAS ON THE SEX OF THE FIRST-BORN

All is dependent of the Constitution, until we know if it will be a boy or a girl

"We hope that the Princes will have a girl and another girl, or that they have a boy and then a girl, or that they have just one girl, to avoid problems". If the desires of the vice-president Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega were accomplished, the Government and La Zarzuela would save a great misfortune: that, in the very XXI century, a girl was “discriminated” towards a man, in the succession to the Throne, as it already happened with Don Felipe and his sisters.

Although the Constitution guarantees the equality between men and women, the text emphasizes the preference of men to the succession to the Throne. For that reason, the Prince of Asturias was named the Heir, before his sister, Infanta Elena, who is the first-born. The Executive has showed its intention to undertake four reforms that would affect the Magna Carta: the reform of the Senate, the reform in the denomination of the Independent Communities, the adoption of the European Constitution and the equality in the monarchic succession. Zapatero has expressed his will to ask the Council of State for an opinion that will guide this subject.

Sources of the Ministry of Justice have assured that the reform of the succession is "an absolutely high-priority" subject; it was included in the electoral program of PSOE and was faced as a commitment of the investiture of Zapatero.

In the department of Lopez Aguilar, they have showed the "will to do that transformation", which is probably the one that easier reaches consensus.

In Moncloa nobody wants to speak of terms and dates for the reform, although they have insisted on the intention of Zapatero to undertake it. The main stumbling block could be the fact that, in order to reform the II Title of the Constitution (which is the one that makes reference to the Crown), it is necessary to obtain the support of two thirds of the Congress and the Senate (which is not very difficult), and then to dissolve immediately the Cortes and to summon elections, so that the new Cortes approve the text and later put it under referendum. So, it means that Zapatero will not undertake the reform until the end of the Legislature, or that he will risk his position under the dictation of the ballot boxes again? In Moncloa, there are no commentaries.

Jorge de Esteban, a university professor in Constitutional Right, published an article in Elmundo, where he animated Aznar to undertake it at the end of his mandate, but it never happened. The article was signed just a few days after the Heir announced his commitment to Letizia Ortiz but, in spite of that, nothing has changed the situation.

After the announcement, all national media immediately switched to blanket coverage of the royal pregnancy, with state radio broadcasting full biographies of Felipe and Letizia to the sound of romantic piano music.

Even television coverage of the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, due to take place later on Sunday, was taken over by excitement at the news. Anchors converged on King Juan Carlos when he arrived at the course to ask him about it.

"All the family is very happy, my grandchildren are saying they're going to have a new cousin, so it's all wonderful," the king said.

If the royal couple were to have a girl, she could be the first Spanish princess to have the same right as a boy to accede to the throne, under a plan announced by the Socialist government in March.

While not banning women from the throne as Japan does, Spain gives precedence to the male line. The government is seeking an opinion on a possible change to the rule from the State Council -- a body made up of elder statesmen, former ministers, judges and civil servants.

There is no suggestion that Felipe would step aside in favor of his two older sisters, but a change would affect his children.

Felipe's elder sisters Elena and Cristina have five children between them -- four of them boys -- and one on the way.

At the official announcement of his engagement, Felipe was asked how many children he wanted. "Well, we can't say with complete certainty. The intention is perhaps more than two and fewer than five," he answered, to the apparent astonishment of his fiancee.

Some reactions:

http://www.elmundo.es/elmundo/2005/0...115549632.html

In declarations to Telecinco in the circuit of Montmeló, Don Juan Carlos said: "We are all very happy. The children also say that they wait for a new cousin". Asked if this is going to be a special grandchild, the King ansered: "No, it is necessary to treat it just like one more".

The Duke of Palma, Iñaki Urdangarín, described the announcement of the pregnancy of the Princess as "the best news" and that "it could not be better"; he also said that all the family is "very contented and enchanted".

Menchu Alvarez del Valle, paternal grandmother of Letizia Ortiz, said she’s "very contented" with the pregnancy, that she described as "a special and very joyful moment". "I am proud. It’s a very special and very happy moment for me ", she added.

The maternal grandfather of Letizia Ortiz, Francisco Rocasolano Camacho, showed his joy about the pregnancy of his granddaughter and stated that, "as all Spain", the most important thing for him is that "there is a heir", without expressing any preference on a boy or a girl. He explained that he knew about the pregnancy "just as you have", referring to mass media.

The pregnancy of the Princess of Asturias, Doña Letizia, has taken place by natural means, without any method of artificial reproduction.

It is expected that the birth will take place at the International Ruber Clinic of Madrid, the same medical centre where Infanta Elena gave birth to her children, Felipe Juan Froilán and Victoria Federica. "It is foreseeable it will happen there", stressed a spokesman of the House of the King, who added that, at the moment, it’s not known if she there will be a boy or a girl, nor the name the Princes of Asturias will give to their first child.

A glamorous former television presenter, Letizia Ortiz, 32, married Crown Prince Felipe, 37, on May 22 last year, and news of a pregnancy has been eagerly awaited in Spain.

"The Prince and Princess of Asturias are delighted to announce they are expecting the birth of their first child next November," the Palace said in a statement.

"Their Majesties the King and Queen wish to express their great happiness at this joyful announcement.

There is no suggestion that Felipe would step aside in favour of his two older sisters, but a change would affect his children.

Princess Letizia of Spain Is Pregnant

Princess Letizia of Spain, Wife of Crown Prince Felipe, Is Pregnant; Baby Due in November

//http://abcnews.go.com/images/site/st..._filler_ap.gifThe Associated Press

MADRID, Spain May 8, 2005 — Princess Letizia of Spain is pregnant and expecting to give birth in November to a baby that could become the second in line to the Spanish thrown, the palace said on Sunday.

Letizia, who married Crown Prince Felipe in a lavish ceremony on May 22, 2004, at Madrid's Almudena cathedral, will deliver the baby in Madrid, a palace spokesman said.

The baby will be second in line of succession to the throne after 37-year-old Felipe, who is King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia's only son and third child. However if it is a girl, she would come after any sons that Felipe and Letizia might have in the future.

The Spanish constitution states that the eldest male is automatically heir to the throne even if he has an older sister.

Ever since the royal wedding, the Spanish gossip press have been watching for signs that the 33-year-old princess was pregnant.

The announcement comes two weeks before Felipe and Letizia celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

Letizia and Felipe surprised Spain on Nov. 1, 2003, by announcing their engagement. Few knew that the heir to the Spanish throne had been dating a woman who was one of the country's best-known television personalities, a divorcee without royal or aristocratic links.

The tall, dashing prince met Letizia, a former TV anchorwoman, at a dinner party in late 2002 and they started dating secretly the following spring.

The Spanish royal family enjoys wide respect, with King Juan Carlos revered for his role in ushering in democracy after the death of Gen. Francisco Franco in 1975 and putting down an attempted coup in 1981.

Felipe's sister, Princess Cristina, the second daughter of Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, is also pregnant and expected to have her fourth child at the beginning of the summer.

Spain's future queen is pregnant

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...ngettybody.jpg Spain's media is giving blanket coverage to the news

Princess Letizia, the future Queen of Spain, is three months pregnant with her first child, the Royal Palace has announced.

Letizia Ortiz, 32, married Crown Prince Felipe, 37, in May last year, shortly after the Madrid train bombings.

The baby, due in November, will be second in line to the throne after the prince, who is King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia's only son.

The palace said the King and Queen wish "to express their great happiness".

Constitution change

If the child is a girl, she will be in line to the throne after any sons that Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia might have in the future.

Under the Spanish constitution, the eldest male automatically succeeds, even if he has an older sister.

However, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has pledged to change the law, saying it discriminates against female royals.

The couple took Spain by surprise when they announced their engagement in November 2003.

The crown prince's romance with a woman who was a well-known television presenter and a divorcee had been kept a secret.

They had met at a dinner party during the previous year. King Carlos said the pregnancy was "great news".

Prince Felipe's sister, Princess Cristina, the second daughter of King Carlos and Queen Sofia, is also pregnant and expected to have her fourth child at the beginning of the summer.

Congratulations !

Congratulations to the Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia!!! They can be relieved now since they were under enormous pressure to continue the bloodline.
It is nice to see all these modern royal couples REALLY HAPPY, because their marriages are true unions of souls, but not duty and obligations.

The announcement comes two weeks before Felipe and Letizia celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Spain's future queen, Princess Letizia, is pregnant and expects to give birth in November, the palace said on Sunday.

Letizia, a former TV anchorwoman who married Crown Prince Felipe in a lavish ceremony on May 22 last year at Madrid's Almudena cathedral, will deliver the baby in Madrid, a palace spokesman said.

"The Prince and Princess of Asturias are delighted to announce they are expecting the birth of their first child next November," the palace said in a statement.

"Their Majesties the King and Queen wish to express their great happiness at this joyful announcement.

However, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has announced his intention to reform the constitution, including changing the rules of succession for the Spanish royals as he considers that the current wording discriminates against women.

A reform is currently being studied but there is no word of when or if it will come into force during the current government which finishes in 2008.

Ever since the royal wedding, the Spanish gossip press has been eagerly watching for signs that the 33-year-old princess was pregnant. News of the pregnancy constantly interrupted the Sunday programming on radio and TV.

King Juan Carlos, who is in Barcelona to watch Sunday's Formula One Spanish Grand Prix, was asked live on TV about the upcoming birth of his seventh grandchild, who he said won't be treated in special way.

"It'll be another grandchild who has to be treated the same way as the others," a happy king said. "It's great news."

The announcement comes two weeks before Felipe and Letizia celebrate their first wedding anniversary.

The couple surprised Spain on November 1, 2003, by announcing their engagement. Few knew that the heir to the Spanish throne had been dating a woman who was one of the country's best-known television personalities, a divorcee without royal or aristocratic links.

Their wedding was a first royal wedding in Spain in 98 years and the first time in Spanish history that a commoner came in line to be queen.

The president of the Spanish Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, considered positive for the foundations of the SpanishState the existence of “an inheriting horizon”, and reiterated his wish of guarantying the equality between sexes, in the access to the Throne.

Rodriguez Zapatero made these considerations today in Moscow, about the announcement made by the House of the King. The head of the Spanish Executive expressed his congratulations to the Royal Family and specially to the Princes of Asturias, and said that this announcement is “very good news, which is going to gather much satisfaction among the Royal Family and which evidently has, in addition, institutional consequences”.

Besides, he expressed his conviction that the great majority of the Spanish society is happy today, because this news is “pleasant, positive and good for the future”. Zapatero said that Prince Felipe called him today, to inform him about the pregnancy of Doña Letizia, so he could speak to him when arriving at the concentration camp of Mauthausen, in Austria, to attend the 60th commemorations of its the liberation. Zapatero added that he was not able to speak with the King, but assured that he will do that “as soon as I can”.

Regarding the rights of succession based on sex criteria, Zapatero said that his position on the matter is well known: “that are absolutely equal rights for men and women”. He added that a constitutional reform is expected, to guarantee that equality and that “there is time” and a whole horizon to do it with calmly. “Anyway, what seems to me advisable to emphasize today is the fact that we have a hereditary horizon is very positive for the foundations of the State”, he said.

There's nothing you can't get from other news sources--after all, besides saying that she's expecting, what else is there to say? The photos are all archive images.

Cool, as I type this I just saw it reported on CNN! It's funny, the reporter said "just" a year after their marriage, while others, more impatient, say, finally! It's all perception, isn't it.

Very happy news.
I found out about it as I was watching the news tonight, it was just a little headline crawl at the bottom of the screen saying Princess Letizia of Spain is pregnant. Still it was unusual since European royals hardly ever make the news on Canadian tv, except for the British royals ofcourse.
Felipe and Letizia's wedding did get good air play here last year though, more than the Danish wedding.
Congrats to Felipe and Letizia and the Spanish royal family.
So many royals expecting babies this year.
I think we'll be seeing a lot of stylish maternity wear;)

OMG, I just read that Letizia is pregnant. So, two of my wishes came true this year, I wanted Letizia and Mary to be pregnant and they are . I think now all the crown princess are pregnant, except of course the Duchess of Cornwall, you never know, the next "good news" might be from England.;)

Anyways, BIG Congratulations to the couple, the would-be grandparents, would-be aunts and uncles, would-be cousins and last but not the least, the Spanish people, who are getting an heir to the heir of the Spanish throne.

ShksprNLov 05-09-2005 12:31 AM

Congratulatoins to Letizia and Felipe! This is fantastic! I was afraid that they would get left behind in the current baby boom so I'm glad they didn't. I'm excited that so many of the princesses are pregnant, so many pictures we will soon have! :D So salutations to them and to the Spanish people.
