Gosh he looks just like Hamzah! I would like to ask something. Is it nece. for a potential wife on a member of the JRF to convert to Islam? This is prob. a stupid question, but is it not allowed in Islam to have a wife who stays Christian?

A Muslim man can marry a Christian or Jewish woman. She doesnt have to convert. The kids have to be brought up Muslim though.
But as for a royal bride, I doubt a future queen of Jordan could've been Christian. That wouldnt have been too popular among Jordanians.
Even if a Christian woman marries into a Christian royal family, but she is of another denomination, she usually has to convert. Like Princess Mary of Denmark.

He does look so unhappy, once he said the 18 months he had been married to Dina had been the saddest of his whole life- I wonder what happened btw the 2s, don't think he chose her himself, just have a look at his face, is a man who's getting married so upset ?

La la 01-19-2005 09:00 AM

I don't think he looks sad, just serious.

Poor thing. He looks absolutely miserable. I guess this was an arranged marraige and not a love match.

La la 01-19-2005 10:50 AM

Arranged marriage doesn't necessarily mean forced marriage. From what I read, she was the one who was reluctant to marry a man much younger than herself.

King Hussein and Dina Bint Abdul Hamid 1955

On April 19, 1955, King Hussein married his distant cousin Dina Bint Abdul Hamid daughter of Al Sharif Abdul Hamid of Egypt.

The bride was six years older than the groom. At the time of the wedding the groom was 19 years and the bride was 25 years old. The bride was Cambridge educated and held a teaching position at the Cairo University.

The couple's initial meeting took place at the home of a royal Iraqi relation in London. This was followed by brief encounters in Maadi, when King Hussein would go for drives with his fianc in a large American car.

It seems that the wives of Jordanian kings are all educated and have better education than these kings. :rolleyes:

"In 1955 Hussein made the first of his four marriages: he wed a distant Hashemite cousin, Dina Abd al-Hamid al-Awn, who was seven years his senior. Queen Dina was an urbane Egyptian intellectual, with a degree in English from Girton College, Cambridge; King Hussein preferred fast cars. When, after only 18 months of marriage, Dina travelled to Cairo to visit a cousin, Hussein wrote from Amman to tell her that the marriage was over. They had one daughter, Alia, whom Hussein kept with him in Amman. Dina was not permitted to see her until she was six. "

==============

The prospective bride was Cambridge-educated and held a teaching post at Cairo University. Never mind that she was six years older than the groom. Being king would made up for any shortcomings on his part.
The choice had fallen on Al Sharifa Dina Abdel Aziz Oaun, a distant cousin. Through her father Al Sharif Abdel Hamid, her lineage--like that of King Hussein--could be traced back to Prophet Mohammed--hence her birthright designation of Al Sharifa (the Honorable).
