Happy Birthday to Prince Bernhard. Wow, 93 years is a long time. If you think about all of the historical events that have taken place in the last 93 years, and Prince Bernhard has been around to witness most of it, it is pretty mind boggling.

HMQueenElizabethII 06-29-2004 08:53 PM

an article from expatica:

Doctors see Bernhard over breathing difficulties

27 October 2004

AMSTERDAM Prince Bernhard, the 93-year-old husband of the late Queen Juliana, was visited by his doctors at Paleis Soestdijk on Wednesday to discuss his recent breathing difficulties, the Government Information Service (RVD) said.

The prince was given the results of medical tests and told what could be done to to alleviate his problems.

Prince Bernhard has undergone regular observation in hospital in recent weeks for shortness of breath. But he was not sick and still received visitors. Bernhard has had regular problems with his bronchial tubes.

The RVD has denied speculation that the prince's condition had suddenly deteriorated. A spokesman also said earlier this month that a 93-year-old suffering from shortness of breath is not if(flashinstalled == 2){document.write("");}else{document.write("[img][/img]");}

The German-born Bernhard met the then Princess Juliana in 1936 during the Winter Olympics in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany, and their engagement was announced seven months later. They were married on 7 January 1937.

The couple's first daughter, Queen Beatrix, took the Dutch throne when her mother abdicated in 1980. The royal couple also had three other daughters: Irene, Margriet and Christina.

Queen Juliana died on 20 March 2004 and was interred in the royal family tomb in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft 10 days later. Despite initial concerns of poor health, Prince Bernhard was fit enough to attend the funeral.

The RVD announced today that it is not going well with the health of prince Bernhard. He has lungcancer and there were found also cancercells on other places in his body.

The prince is getting weaker and weaker, the RVD said.

xxLindaxx 11-17-2004 01:46 PM

From the RVD:

I had hoped that Prince Bernhard would be able to see his daughter's Silver Jubilee celebrations. Sadly, it looks as if that will not be the case.

Hopefully, he will be free from pain.
