Karl XIII (1748-1818) was King of Sweden from 1809 to 1818.
He was the second son of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Queen Louisa Ulrika.

In 1772 Prince Karl cooperated in the revolutionary plans of his elder brother, King Gustav III of Sweden.
Karl was appointed Duke of Sodermanland as a sign of recognition.
Karl was given several official tasks during his period as Duke of Sodermanland.
He served as regent in 1777 when King Gustav III stayed in Russia.
In 1780 Karl served as formal chief commander during Gustav III's stay in Spa.

In 1792 Gustav IV Adolf became the King of Sweden.
His uncle, Prince Karl, the Duke of Sodermanland, acted as regent.
Karl was the regent from 1792 to 1796.
Karl became the King of Sweden in 1809.
Karl XIII became King because of the abdication of his nephew, Gustav IV Adolf.
Karl signed treaties with Denmark and France.
He also signed a treaty which ceded Finland to Russia.
How did King Karl XIII choose Christian August (Charles August) as his first heir to the Swedish throne?

It was said to be George Aldesparre who recommended Christian. George was one of the leaders in the coup that forced the abdication of Gustav. Frederik VI was said to have been his first choice (Christian's older brother was married to Frederik's sister) but the eventual choice fell on Christian (possible Fred turned it down). He was a popular choice with bishops, parliament and the king. But many nobles supported the deposed king and his son.
